Problem Transferring files from Laptop to Tablet via USB or OneDrive

Hello - please bear with me as I am elderly. Can anyone help?
I have both a laptop and a new Tablet and both have latest version of Windows 10. I have set up my Tablet to look the same as my laptop but unlike in the past with other tablets my new one will not accept file transfers via USB from the laptop. When I connect the usb to both and to rt click on the files in my docs on the laptop and select 'send to' my tablet does not appear in the drop down list!

I tried another method using One Drive which I never understood. In One Drive on my laptop looking in the vault I could see all my docs which I wanted to transfer - great. So I then downloaded and opened One Drive on the new tablet but all there was in there were the docs/files I had accessed in the last week since I purchased the tablet!

I assumed that the two would match up? Someone suggested that my accounts did not match on each computer but I was asked to sign in on Microsoft on the tablet when setting up One Drive - is that correct? Don't know what account is on laptop as I always use Google. My email is the same as I only have one.

Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Thank you all.

    Moggie,

Please explain how you are connecting your computer and tablet.

You ought to be able to plug the USB into the computer then copy the filies from the computer to the USB.
Then connect the USB to the tablet instead and copy the filels from the USB to the tablet.

Thanks for quick reply Denis. What I have been doing is this:
Connecting the standard USB end of my lead into my laptop and the Micro end of the USB into my tablet. This is the lead I use for charging my Tablet.
There is only one micro port on the Tablet. Am I doing this wrong?

    Moggie,

Yes, the method cannot work. Computers and tablets are not designed to be connected by just running a lead between them.

Instead, plug a USB memory stick into the computer then copy the filies from the computer to the USB then take the USB out of the computer.
Then connect the USB to the tablet instead and copy the files from the USB to the tablet.

    Moggie,

I cannot help with OneDrive aspects. Perhaps somebody else will chip in about that. It does seem that you are almost there that way since you got some of the files across.

If you look in the TenForumsTutorial index for OneDrive you might find out how to use it better. I removed OneDrive from my computer without ever using it.
Addn - I have just looked through the index and the OneDrive entries all seem to be about specialist aspects of it rather than a simple 'how to sync' guide.

    Moggie,

It occurs to me that, judging by what you have already written, you might not know much about USB sticks, external hard drives connected by USB, types of connection on tablets, ...

If this is the case then just say so and we can help.
One thing that will help keep it in bounds is if you can confirm that your tablet really does have just a MicroUSB connection [some have that type, some have 'USB-C' connections, some have both].

If you have two windows 10 machines, you should be able to set up a PUBLIC folder in each machine. Then you can set the sharing options for those folders so that everyone on a home network can read, write, or modify files in that folder. You would then be able to find the other computer's folder in your NETWORK. I will say that there are enough steps to doing this, that you're likely going to need some help and follow some tutorials , and it can be a bit frustrating. But if you expect to be sharing files between these machines for a long time, it may be worth the headache. Once its done, you can put a link to the shared folders on the desktop of each machine, and easily drag files in on one machine, and out on the other.

However, if this is just an OCCASIONAL thing, a USB drive like other's have mentioned will be your best and easiest choice. You can plug USB drives (or small thumb-drives) into a machine, copy files to it, and move it to another machine for copying there.

So to summarize, the USB drive method involves more steps, because you have to move the USB drive from one machine to the other, but it requires a lot less setup because USB drives are pretty much "plug-and-play" devices. On the other hand, sharing folders between machines on the same in-house network (wired or Wi-Fi) takes a bit more setup, and can be frustrating to get right if you're new to doing it. (heck... its tough to find two tutorials explaining how to do it that explain it the same way!). But the advantage is that once its done, it becomes the easiest way to move data and files between machines, and you won't even have to remember where you put the thumb-drive!

Thanks Guru, Peter Pan and everyone. I have at last got itr working! It was indeed th fact tht although I signed in with MS on my new tablet I had always signed in 'local' on my laptop!

Have now changed the laptop to MS sign in and have managed to transfer my files!

    Thanks again
