    Moggie,

Since you are now successfully using OneDrive, you have probably lost interest in USB memory sticks.

    Here goes anyway,
    - Your computer has normal, full-sized USB connectors - USB-A connectors
    - Your tablet has a MicroUSB connector
    - You can buy USB memory sticks that have a USB-A connector on one side and a MicroUSB connector on the other. I have never tried one. You can see photos of one at SanDisk Ultra 64GB Dual USB Flash Drive USB M3.0 up to 150 MB/s: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
    - You can buy normal USB memory sticks that fit your computer and you can buy USB-A to MicroUSB adapters to fit it to your tablet. This is what I do.
    - Doing it with adapters means I can use the appropriate adapter with any USB device which I want to connect to my tablet / phone including USB memory sticks, powerbanks, external wifi keyboard & mouse.
    - Doing it with adapters also means that I can cope with getting a new tablet/phone later on that has USB-C connections instead of MicroUSB ones. I can carry on using my devices and only relegate the old adapters to the will-come-in-handy-again-one-day box.

Do note that you will soon want to have an external hard drive for your backups.
    - Now you have mastered OneDrive you might be content to use that as a backup for all your own files
    - You will also want to make 'system images' on an external hard drive as a backup of your Windows hard drive
    - System images include all the drive's bootup properties so if your hard drive failed you could replace the duff hard drive, restore the latest system image, copy back the latest copies of all your own files from OneDrive and then you would be back to square one with a functioning computer as if the failure had never happened.
    - If your tablet is a Windows one then you can make system images for that as well. I don't know about Android tablets [I bought a tablet that had both Android & Windows and I immediately removed Android so I would know the beast I was dealing with.]

Thanks for all that info Denis. Firstly I have backed up all my docs photos which are on my laptop etc on to a separate mini hardrive some time ago. I think I should invest in some memory sticks so have ordered some 16gb ones on Am...n.

Also I have got a USB to micro USB but I have ordered one of the useful 'multi connectors' you mentioned.

Yes - both my laptop (Acer) and my tablet are Windows 10 so I have the tablet set up the same as my laptop. My G.children and G. G Children mostly use Android but I can't get used to it now at 80! Same goes for Apple.

Thanks for persevering with this post.

    Moggie,

I assume"mini hardrive" is an external hard drive connected by USB. You might well find that it works when connected to the tablet [mine do - it is only my phone that cannot supply enough power for them so I am forced to rely on USB memory sticks with the phone].
    - How big is the mini hardrive? I mean how many GB / TB?
    - How much space on your Windows drive does File explorer say you have used up? [on your computer, on your tablet]
    - Is the remaining unused space on your mini hardrive enough for the total used amounts on both the computer & tablet?
    - If so, you can consider using it for system image backups.

Thanks for that Guru. Going thru your points from the top:

Yes my ext. hardrive is Core by CnM and I think it is 50gb. I tried to connect it to my Tablet but nothing happened - however connecting it to my Laptop showed all the folders I had saved.

In my Laptop it shows - 40gb free of 98gb. So that seems to be a lot of free space? I only use my Laptop for emails, photos, a few saved movies and of course searching the web.

I keep all my family photos (about 900) on a separate memory stick so I always have them to hand and the same for my holiday photos.

So - you have helped me lot. Just one more thing...………..when I put this external drive in my Laptop and thee same for any of my memory sticks there is a sound and a message comes up asking me what to do to open them. However...…….
when I put a memory stick into my Tablet via the micro USB port nothing at all happens! On my previous Tablet which was
an android incidentally it showed connection to the USB and I could save the items. Also if I rt clicked say on Docs the USB showed as an option in the drop down box!

    Thanks again

    Moggie,

I've numbered these topics for ease of reference.
    - I have touched on some difficult issues and will be able to advise you decently if anything needs any special action .
    - I have put two things in bold. That is the equivalent of shouting / thumping the table so please forgive me afterwards.

1 I'm surpised that it is only 50GB. But if that is what is shown by File explorer then so be it.

2 Tablets are all different so it might be that yours does not allow the extHDD to draw enough power.
2.1 But, just to be certain, reconnect the extHDD then open Disk management on your tablet [C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc] or any other partiton manager that you already have [such as MiniTool partition manager MiniTool Partition Wizard | Best partition magic alternative for Windows PC and Server]. Does it appear? If you have any doubts, post a screenshot - if you do so please adjust the column widths on the top half by dragging the column dividers around so that all the text can be seen.
2.2 And, see #7 below, do it again for that USB memory stick - after you have copied its contents to your laptop as a backup.
2.3 And, given these problems, while the extHDD is connected, open Device manager, click on the Disk drives entry - are there any warning icons? If you are not sure, post a screenshot.
2.4 And check Device manager again while the memory stick is connected.
2.5 And, still in Device manager, is there a section called Other devices [which is a euphemism for not recognised / no driver found / no driver installed] or any entries in any section called Unknown device [instead of a device name]? Post screenshots in the first instance.

2.6 Have you ever reinstalled Windows on your tablet? I only ask because driver problems might indicate an incomplete reinstallation.
2.7 Or might these problems have existed ever since you upgraded from Windows 8?

3 Yes, you have stacks of spare room on your laptop. There is nothing unusal about that. On my most compact computer [a tablet with an attached keyboard - so it makes a mini-laptop] Windows & my applications take up about 20GB whereas on my main laptop they take up about 50GB.

4 I hope that you also copy the whole lot onto your laptop so that you have a backup copy in case the USB memory stick goes wrong.

5 That is probably the sound set in Control panel, Sound, Sounds tab, Device connect.

    - Select that entry in the list and click on the Test button to see if that is what you mean.
    - While you are there, drop down a line and press the test button for Device disconnect so that you can recognise that one aswell.

6 That is probably AutoPlay at work. Most people disable it to stop anything malign being able to start itself {there are other layers of protection but AutoPlay is thought to represent an easy target}. You can see that there are choices for many file types. If you alter anything, click the Save button at the bottom of the window afterwards.

7 I've asked in #2 above for Disk mgmt diagrams so that this problem can be better understood.

8 This is how I would expect your current laptop to behave. Hopefully, it will later - I think the problem will turn out to be drivers not being installed properly.

10 I think your tablet also has an SD card reader. They can be handy locations for local backups because they don't get in the way like USB memory sticks do.

    Hello Denis
Have spent a lot of time (sometimes confused by the technology) following what you said and somehow it is now working!

First of all I went into Device Mgr as you said and opened up and looked at everything to see if there were any notifications of wrong drivers. The only one in the long dropdown list that showed a mark against it was USB Host cont. and USB root hub? 3.0. It seemed that the drivers? were missing. So I found out how to replace the drivers and the 'marks' went.

I then did what you suggested in PC settings and removed the 'automatic' for USB and set it to ' advise me when....' (or something.

I then tried again to plug in my backup drive to the tablet and it asked me various questions. I ticked on 'show files' and lo and behold all the files/folders on the drive appeared! So I was able to rt click what I wanted and send to my docs.

Finally you mentioned a slot for an SD card in this Tablet - you were correct and I have put in a 16gb sd card which I had and it then offered me the choice of placing some files (like my photos) there.

So......thanks so much for all your efforts Denis. All is now working ok.
    Regards
    Moggie
