    Question about processor/ram when choosing laptop

    Hey guys, would you rather have a laptop with a Intel i3 and 8gb of ram or i5 with 4gb of ram. My buddy is getting a laptop with these 2 configurations, obviously it’s because of his budget and he asked me which one. I would select i3 with 8 but I’m not so sure

    Not enough info---by a long shot.

    Which i3?

    Which i5?

    What are the predominant tasks to be done with the machine?

    Win 10 will run OK on 4 GB of RAM. A weak i3 will be a weak i3 regardless of the RAM count.

    But maybe the choices are a strong i3 versus a weak i5?

    So---not enough info.

    i5-470um: introduced in 2010; dual core; clockspeed 1.3 ghz; Passmark benchmark score 1067; single thread score 482;

    i3-3217UE; introduced 2014; dual core; clockspeed 1.6 ghz; Passmark benchmark score 2162; single thread score 703;

    Knowing no more than you've told us, I'd go with the i3-3217UE. It has more RAM as well although that might not matter in your case.

    I assume both laptops are used and that there are NO other choices.

    Knowing no more than you've told us, I'd go with the i3-3217UE. You might have a case where the 8 gb of RAM is a very important factor, but you haven't said anything about what the laptop will be asked to do.

    I assume both laptops are used and that there are NO other choices.
    To make it easier, it’s for everyday use and insider updates in the fast ring, one laptop is a dell latitude 3330 with i3 and the other is a dell vostro v130 with the i5

    I made a mistake the i3 is a Intel Core i3-2375M Processor and the i5 is the 470um.

    See my edited post.

    I say i3 hands down--unless there is more info unstated. The i3 is more powerful and has more RAM.

    There may or may not be other underlying reasons why you'd choose the i5---unrelated to CPU power or RAM, perhaps based on CPU or motherboard features..............I know nothing about that.
