Do any of you know which update caused this?

I'm facing the same problem here. The troubleshooter says "Incorrect permissions on Windows Seach directories". I tried to carry out all suggested actions (How to Fix 'Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories' Issue - Appuals.com) but none worked. I hope Microsoft fixes this, because Windows 10 is useless without the windows search.

Don't think it was an update - at least not a visible one. For me it just stopped this morning. According to reddit
Windows Search gets a brand new build everyday (except for weekends) for everyone that's running the latest version of Windows (includes: 2004, 1909, 1903, & 1809), which explains why that could be.
The regedit fix to disable bing seems to work for me on 1909 but not 2004 (insider).

Using step 3 in the tutorial below to "Turn Off Search online and include web results from Bing" should fix the broken search in Windows 10.

I ran the Search Troubleshooter. It claimed to fix the problem, but search wasn't working immediately.

After a restart, it is working again.

Whether that is a robust fix, I don't know. I haven't checked my other two Windows devices yet.

Are there really constant silent updates? That'd be news.

Later: If I understand this, it was broken because of an issue with Microsoft's servers. Windows search goes down because of a Microsoft services outage - The Verge There were no changes to the Windows 10 installation.
