PC makes click sound starts fans then clicks stops loading and repeats

    Hi all.
So every time I turn PC on it makes a single click sound, starts the fans and then clicks and PSU repeats the cycle never getting to Post?
I tried another PSU but it did the exact same thing.

    Just standard stuff.

Disconnect gear not required plugged into ports.

Open case, inspect overall. Any capacitors bulgging?

Is CPU cooling fan running when you power on.

If so equipped does your MB have any error leds.

Disconnect all drives other than boot, try boot, still no boot disconnect boot drive.

Still with issues connect drives and try with one stick of memory observing MB requirements for where one stick must be seated.

Still no boot, replace the lone stick with another.

Still no post pull graphics card.

No, Ken. I tried all the suggestions and swapped the battery as a last ditch attempt but still got the same problem. One glimmer of hope was on a longer cycle that sustained, it reached the initial first time EUFI bios screen but then would make the fateful click and return to the loop of shorter and longer power starts.
I guess that's that. Got to either be motherboard or cpu but in either case it's 7 1/2 years old so game over for that one. Sad really, as the intel 3570k was plenty powerful for what I used it for.
Thanks for the suggestions, though, Ken.

When it is a fan issue, it is always good to check if the thermal paste is gone or not on the fan.
After some years, they turn non-existent, and the problem can show up as a fan or power problem.

Over the years I've found the major "click" is the voice coil relay in HDDs that works with the arms holding the read/write heads, snaps the them back to the stop when losing power or not maintaining power to the relay.

Repasted CPU (looked OK though), no joy.
I've tried it all now down to bare bones. Swapped out everything/disconnected etc. and same result.
    RIP media PC.
Ordered some new bits. AMD here we come - never thought I'd say that again...
    Cheers all.
