New Win 10 on new PC, where to put program files ?

    Hello,

The new PC will have a Samsung 970 evo plus 500GB boot drive. The operating system only will be on this drive.
A friend suggested that I have all the program files on a different drive to minimize wear on the ssd. I use many non mainstream programs that do not have an option as where to install. If I do this, I would end with program files dirs on two drives.

Is there any real advantage of doing this? Will it make the boot drive last longer?

It would slow down your system.
The SSD will be obsolete before it wears out.

For one thing, the vast majority of program files are written to the SSD once and after that are only read when the program loads not writes to the SSD. Rewrites would only be when you install an update to a program.

    Riley,

Put your OS & programs on your SSD, data on the other drive & you'll be fine. See my experience below.

    I have 3 PCs with 256 GB SSDs & I manage 8TB data plus I'm 80 yrs old who can't type. 2 are 7yr old & both are still working fine. The 3rd I'm setting up w/W10 on a ASUS GL503G gaming Laptop with a 256 GB, M.2 PCIe NVme SSD & a 1TB 5400 rpm Firecuda SSHD.

All these PC's were build by experts in 2 states, and they strongly suggested SSD's esp for the OS & programs. Just don't fragment the SSDs. Of course diverse experience in Info MGMT would be helpful.

    Hope this helps.

    Shouldn't it be 'Don't defragment SSD's? ......

I only install very large games programs in my second hard disk, else all programs are on the SSD C: drive for speed. My 2012 Intel SSD still shows 100% health.
