Windows 10 1809 Home Edition support question!?

    Hi,

As we are all aware, Win10 Home 1809 support ends within the next few months.

My question is, will they keep getting security updates through the update utility or will they not? I don't care about the feature updates as I was never interested in beta testing the latest that they force feed on the general populace.

1809 builds have the same kernel that the LTSC, and in my eyes I see no reason why this version would suddenly fall out of "support" or whatever.

Can anyone definitively confirm that they will shut off updates through the Update agent for the Home Edition versions of the OS once the support deadline passes?

(Even though they will keep the version in support for LTSC, which is completely backwards[read re#arded] in my eyes)

The reason I want to know, is because I'm sitting on it. I have a few options configured to disable OS upgrades via the update utility, so I can use it like a regular user without ever having to worry about a surprise 10 minute "We are updating" screen after a boot up or restart.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
10 home I'm surprised you haven't been updated to at least 1903 yet.

You can continue to use 1809 as an unmaintained build as long as you like. Bear in mind that with windows update disabled, you will not get routine Defender updates.

Can anyone definitively confirm that they will shut off updates through the Update agent for the Home Edition versions of the OS once the support deadline passes?
Description of the transition and future for 1809:
Microsoft Starts Forced Feature Updates on Windows 10 1809

No updates for Windows 10 1809 after May 12, 2020

Windows 10, version 1809 was made available more than a year ago, on November 13, 2018, and it has an end of service date of May 12, 2020, for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions.
After May 12, 2020, devices still running the October 2018 Update will no longer receive any future quality and security updates.
However, extremely rarely, Microsoft might still issue updates for highly critical security vulnerabilities that may potentially have a major impact on no longer serviced versions such as Windows 10 1809.

There are various 3rd party utilities including one listed in a tutorial here that both conveniently disable updates and allow you to check for them in a controlled manner. No need to invent your own method.
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10
    Option 7

Make sure you use disk imaging routinely as so often recommended here: e.g. Macrium Reflect (free-paid).

You can always download old build iso's - make sure you have one should you need to perform an in-place upgrade repair install.

    Doing this:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\

    Create a DWORD

DisableOSUpgrade and set its value to 1.

So far, on the 2 machines I have in use, mine and a relatives, they have never upgraded to the newer versions. The option is there to click on if you want to do it manually. Right under the "Update now" button.

    Another:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

    Create a DWORD

NoAutoUpdate and set its value to 1

Should stop the annoying nuisance of the Update agent deciding whenever at a random point in time to update the machine, interrupting your workflow and annoying you to all hell.

These 2 steps are essentially a minimum requirement to keep the OS from buggering you.

    - - - Updated - - -

"However, extremely rarely, Microsoft might still issue updates for highly critical security vulnerabilities that may potentially have a major impact on no longer serviced versions such as Windows 10 1809."

    - Well, that sort of answers the question.

I guess I'll keep on living on it then. Because what that hints at, is probably the fact that they'll keep the version support very much alive while attempting to discourage the regular user to roll over to a newer version because:

"After May 12, 2020, devices still running the October 2018 Update will no longer receive any future quality and security updates."

This wording is so clever, but the last sentence. Makes you think.

But it does say, that they will still support it then. Which is probably because of the LTSC presence on the same build.

But bleepingcomputer and then https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...indows-10-1909 and then https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/...s/ba-p/1002660 . Where is the wording for the "However, extremely rarely, Microsoft might still issue updates for highly critical security vulnerabilities that may potentially have a major impact on no longer serviced versions such as Windows 10 1809." sentence sourced from?

    Is Sergiu Gatlan reputable?

There is clear precedent for this, so it's at least a reasonable informed surmise.

No, it does not. The "might" refers to exceptions. There have been less then a handful.

No, they will not provide updates for the Home Edition or any other non-LTSC installations.

I have been through all this myself after Version 1709 fell out of support. Stop clutching at straws. Support ends on the declared date. When that happens you should stop using the computer for internet-connected work.

Please explain why you don't want to update to the current version, Ver 1909. There's nothing wrong with it apart from a limitation in File explorer searching [which can be side-stepped by using a third-party search utility such as NirSoft's SearchMyFiles]
