I let Windows 10 handle it, using generic drivers where needed and they worked fine. I tried updating drivers but don't remember what did or did not work. This was 5 or 6 years ago, sorry.

I currently have a HP Pavilion DV7-6C63NR laptop which also has no Windows 10 drivers, only Win 7 and 8. It runs amazingly well, especially with 8GB Win 10 Pro X64 or RAM and a 500GB SSD. Currently running 1909 18363.562. Device Manager has no yellow or red marks, everything is working. Sound card is running a generic driver and works fine.

Edit: The first thing you need to do is backup your current install. The best way to do this is to use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image backup to an external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive now is a good time to get one as regular backup should be a part of your normal process. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for $60 (less if on sale).

Then do the upgrade to Windows 10. If any serious problems (doubtfull) recovery is 20 to 30 minutes away.

Your are proposing a win 7 to win 10 upgrade. If it cause any issue, are you advising me to take clean win 10 install?

If yes, how do I use the back-up of win 7 to bring back all win 7 installed software/tools?

How do I sync win 7 registry with win 10 registry to make win 7 installed software/tools to work ?

Do I need to make win 10 install media (ISO file )?

    Thanks for your guidance.

Dp an upgrade. Most of what you have with Windows 7 will still be there and working after Windows 10 is installed. If there are significant problems then you have two options.

    1. Clean install Windows 10. Once done, reinstall needed programs, restore saved data from Macrium Backup.
    2. Restore Macrium Backup of Windows 7 and forget windows 10. You'll be right back to where you were when the backup was created.

See here: Log files that are created when you upgrade to a new version of Windows

Zip the first set of files and upload the zip file here so we can look at it.

The following log files are created when an upgrade is successful:

    • C:\Windows\Panther\Setupact.log
    • C:\Windows\panther\setuperr.log
    • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
    • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
    • C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
    • C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log
    • C:\Windows\panther\miglog.xml

Should be some clue in one of them as to what happened.

Edit: Before you try again, uninstall any 3rd party anti-virus/firewalls.
If you have more than one hard drive, disconnect all but the Windows 10 boot drive.
Disconnect everything except mouse, keyboard and display (Only 1).

Thanks for your guidance. As you said, I am surprised when I tried win10 upgrade 2nd time. It took 5+ hours complete the upgrade on HP DV6-DX.

How do I verify/check this upgrade OK?

I did see windows update history is empty.

Do you still need all the log files listed above ?

I did see ms security essential is not there in win 10. Does win 10 has built in "ms security essential"?

    Thanks again

Windows defender is a beefed up version of Essentials and usually is turned on automatically.

No need for the logs now since you got a successful install.
Only real way to verify a good install is to use it.

Do a Windows Update. Once complete, do an image backup using Macrium reflect to an external hard drive. This is now the base for Windows 10 so it's a good idea to have a backup image you can restore to if something goes wrong or if you screw something up while playing around testing.

To verify what version of Windows 10 you have Press the Windows key +R in the Run box type winver and press enter. That will tell you the version #. Now get used to Windows 10, If you can't find something, use the Search function.

    Thanks for weighing in.

I see windows 10 Ver 1909 (OS Build 18363.592) for winver response.

run in elevated command prompt sfc /scannow ==> results

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I did follow the Command prompt admin link. I did not see command prompt, it shows powershell

Are command prompt & power shell same ? See screenshot attached.
