dammit, sorry; i didn't read the download page properly, scrolled too fast i guess. anyways, i'm gonna pull that drive because after the previous issue i just mentioned i'm not going to try Crystal again. i've got a new WD Blue on order so i'll put that in and see how it goes.
thanks for the help so far, not sure the failing drive is the actual issue, but given what happened above it's probably bedt to get rid of it, better safe than sorry.
    cheers

The crystal disk standard edition is < 1 minute diagnostic to report SMART.

The crytaldiskmark is to test read write performance.

For drives there are end users that will replace drives immediately for any problem and others that will use drives until the terminal event.
The most important step is to backup important files to another drive or the cloud.

was nothing much vital on the seagate, all my ripped CDs which are already copied to my MP player etc.

Place the computer in safe mode: shift + restart
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

Run HD tune on the crucial drive to display Health results (SMART) > post an image into the thread

A couple of (probably obvious) statements:
    • Drive and memory problems could be caused by, rather than the cause of unplanned restarts.
    • You may never find the cause.

I had a PC that had intermittent failures. They started within a couple months of getting it. (It was a web-ordered custom build so I couldn't easily just "take it back" and get a replacement.) Sometimes it would go months without failure. Sometimes it would not complete POST before powering off. (Hint: if it powers off during POST, don't blame Windows.)

First I replaced ram (which actually did have problems).
Then I replaced the primary drive (a small SSD) which wasn't big enough to do the Win 10 upgrade).
Then I replaced the power supply.
    None of that helped.
Eventually I replaced the motherboard and have not had the problem for several years.

The only thing left from the original build is the case and a couple small HDDs, but the problem is gone.

FFS. just had another. puter's been on about three hours, nothing strenuous again.
really thought that replaced drive had been the cure. four weeks of perfect behaviour and then again a quit for no reason.
