All applications are crashing every 30 minutes or so

Mysterious problem - applications on my HP laptop crash every 30-45 minutes or so and it does not seem to depend on what application(s) are running. I get different error messages depending on which application is crashing. Can anybody help me troubleshoot? Not sure what to do. . . Windows Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.973)

    Hello,
    a. When did this start?
    b. Have you checked your disk and file system -HD Tune (free)
    Download HD Tune 2.55
    And if ok
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt)?
    c. What has changed that might have led to this?
    d. Do you have a disk image created before this started happening? tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging to give an easy way back to a previous good state- e.g. Macrium Reflect (free-paid)...

This protects you from many issues- user error, failing disks, stolen PC...

    e. Have you run a RAM check? (Tutorial available)

    f. If all pass, please do a clean boot (Google if unsure) and report if any crashes occur.

    g. Please confirm you are not experiencing BSODs

Once you've done those basic things, post back with results. Thanks.

Thanks very much for the reply!

    a. It started happening about a week ago when I noticed that tabs in Firefox kept spontaneously crashing and giving “Gah your tab just crashed errors.” It does not happen right away, but after a half hour or hour so Firefox becomes “unstable” and the tabs keep crashing. Just closing and restarting Firefox does not fix the problem, but if I reboot Firefox works OK for another half hour or so and then becomes unstable again. I tried a few of the remedies suggested for this Firefox problem I found online, but they did not fix the problem. I did notice that my virus and threat protection under Windows Defender was giving me a “your virus and threat protection is managed by your organization” error so maybe I got a virus or malware or something? I fixed that and it appears to be running fine now. I am running Norton and I ran a full disk scan, but it found no security risks. Then I tried using Edge instead of Firefox but again found that after an hour or so it would crash. I do not get a BSoD, but get a blank screen with a tiny little icon in the middle and it is just frozen and I have to reboot. After rebooting it behaves for an hour or hour or so and then crashes begin again. Next I found that VLC media player was spontaneously crashing after a half hour or hour or so. Those are the only 3 applications I have run since the problem started, but they are all behaving wonky.

    b. I ran HD Tune 2.55 and it showed all OK and no damaged blocks. I ran chkdsk from the admin command prompt and it found no problems.

    c. I have not made any changes since this is started that I can think of – no new software installs or anything. Just business as usual.
    d.
Alas, I am afraid I do not have a disk image from before the problem started.
    e. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic to check RAM – it found no memory errors.

    f. I did a clean boot and started using it. It was behaving itself pretty well, but after just under 2 hours Firefox tabs have started crashing again. 7 minutes later Edge crashed with an error saying “SegurazoClient.exe System Error. Unknown Hard Error.” And then a few minutes later VLC media player crashed.
    g. I am not getting any BSoD

    Thanks, try
    a. Creating a new user for test purposes, log in as that user, and see if the same things happens.
    b. If that still fails, try booting to Safe Mode and see what happens.
    c. You you notice any difference when running on battery?

Note that the checks you've done so far don't exclude hardware problems of course.
    As it's a laptop I presume you're not overclocking.

Have you changed any RAM recently and is all your RAM the same?

    Please see this: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topi...-for-segurazo/

Segurazo is a "system optimizer". These so-called "system optimizers" use intentional false positives to convince users that their systems have problems. Then they try to sell you their software, claiming it will remove these problems

Thanks. I tried logging in as a new "test" user and the same thing happened. This time I got an error message saying "The exception breakpoint. A breakpoint has been reached. (0x80000003) occurred in the application at location 0x00007FFFF340B785." I next tried booting to safe mode (selecting F5, Safe Mode with Networking), but it is not connecting to the internet in this mode so I can't test the browsers. I also tried rebooting and running on battery instead of having it plugged in - this also made no difference and it did the same thing.

Did you stop the process (you should have been given 2 choices)? What is the location of 0x00007FFFF340B785?

Thank you for the continued help, everybody, and thanks for pointing out the solution to the Exception Breakpoint error. I tried solutions 2 and 3 earlier, but not solution 1. I just ran the system file checker scan (sfc /scannow) in solution 1 as directed. After running, it reported that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. I rebooted, but unfortunately it has still not solved the problem - after a couple hours things are crashing again and eventually the whole system freezes and must be rebooted - same thing.

I did do a full scan with my Norton security software and it did not find any security threats - would that be the malware search you suggested?

    How do I check temperature?

    Thanks again, everybody!

Segurazo is a "system optimizer" -- I hope you have full image backups on external media before system optimizer(s) were installed and used. In some cases, either full image restore or a repair install, was necessary to undo the configurations and settings damage. If this optimizer is found to be a contributory to the problems, it might take some work and time to fix.
Concerning possible laptop overheating, using an external USB cooling assembly (one giant or twin fans) will definitely help temps down. My two laptops always use such things.
