Copy folders from 1 disk to another

What the heck is wrong with Win 10? At the present time I'm running Win 10 Ver.1909, OS build 18363.692 and can't even copy folders from one disk to another. The folders are on a Samsung 1tb SSD and copying to a WD 3TB disk. When I select a folder, for example "MP3's" it will copy so far then stop and hang. When it comes to mp4's it does the same thing. When I try to cancel the job, it says that it's cancelling but it sits there and does nothing. The only way I can get the computer to respond is to reboot. No, I can't clone or image the disk because the 3tb has a larger recovery space than the 1tb. So the question is what the heck do I do? I want it as a back up, that's all.

Open file explorer x 2.

For the first file explorer copy 1/3 of the files.

For the second file explorer identify the destination folder and paste the files.

Continue moving the files in portions.

zbook: What is the idea behind your answer? Why open 2 file explorers when one is sufficient to do the job? Is there a bug in Windows that no longer allows you to copy folders from on disk to another? I need to know more as to why you have to open 2 file explorers just to copy folders from one disk to another, there has to be a reason.
I'll try it and see what happens but there must be a problem in Windows causing this.

The purpose of two file explorers is to make the copy and paste easy.

Both windows are in view.


For example:
One computer that I use failed to upgrade.
I used file explorer for the computer and another file explorer for the external hard drive.
Users folders were copied and pasted from the internal HD to the external HD.
Having each in view made the task easy.

Maybe related to your power settings.

I agree with xpac5896. Two Explores pages can help to navigate but doesn't change the fact that copy folders freezes the computer.

Open device manager. Is there any yellow alerts of missing drivers?
As it's an Intel system download and run Driver & Support Assistant to see if there is any driver to be updated.
As it has a tracking feature, uninstall after use.

If you are unable to copy and paste the files within the folders too then report that into the thread.

If necessary the hardware can be tested.

Hope I can help some.

For copying files like that I would be thorough with each folders security permissions to start with. Making sure both disks have the same users on each. I usually manually add myself either way and Windows can not argue with me then hehe.
Once you’re happy with duplicate permissions, After that I then give each drive a quick chkdsk and fix if needed. Before now I’ve had to run chkdsk a few times to completely remove corrupt files.

Okies, Now I would go through all the music and video files you have and make sure there are no duplicate folders/files. Get rid of any thumbs.db crap that is hanging around in various folders, as that is a hog on transfer speeds.

If these MP3’s and mp4’s are from other sources, I would definitely strip each folders personal details and properties.

So, if you have a music album with album art, playlists, tracks. I would first right click the album jpeg, properties and remove details, then the playlist file, same again, remove details.
Now you can right click all the tracks together, right click to properties, then details, and remove all information from the files.
You will see security permissions being removed from every file. For me this information needn’t be there and from experience just bogs it down.

Once you have stripped all property details from all music and video folders, it would be best to now compress/zip/rar folders into say 4.5-5gb batches.
Now copy away at your hearts content with 100% better file transfer without machine screwing up

Permission issues are flagged to the user by Windows, so he would know if that is the problem. As for removing the metadata, why would you even consider that? I have a huge mp3 collection (over 256GB) which I have copied or synched to both internal and external drives many times without any issues. Obviously if you are not using USB 3 this will be painfully slow.
