    file explorer preview pane crashing

Late last week, in file explorer with preview pane set to on, file explorer crashes/freezes when any document is selected.

    I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.18362 Build 18362.

Hi, does this happen if you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user?

Does this happen with e.g. the following document types: txt rtf xlsx pdf jpg i.e. a good range of different types?

History: what change do you believe occurred 'late last week'? E.g. program installation/uninstallation/update/changed default associations/cat ran across keyboard....

    Do you have either
    - a relevant disk image? (tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine and frequent use of disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) so you have a second chance and can rcover from many issues without needing advice)?
    - a System Restore point you can use?

Does this happen if you do a clean boot (Google if unsure how)?

    file explorer preview pane crashing

    Dalchina,

I will have to ask our IT to create a new user. Our IT provided me with the following which did not change anything:
    1. Right click on Windows Start > Windows Powershell (Admin), Type "netsh winsock reset" and reboot computer
    2. Open File Explorer > View tab > Options > Change folder and search options > View tab > Check Launch folder windows in a separate process >

I know for sure that it happens on docx, xlsx and pdf files.

I don't believe anything changed. I noticed this late-Friday. I don't recall when I would have viewed something in preview pane last before then; but since, it is something I do "on auto-pilot," I don't think I'd notice unless it wasn't working (as it isn't).

I'll have to talk to IT about the rest but I was hoping to find that someone else was experiencing this, not just me. And was hoping not to have to perform a clean reboot, etc.

Hmm, they should be sorting out this for you rather than you seeking advice and feeding them ideas.

As it's happening with a variety of file types like that it doesn't seem linked to a particular program.

I've not heard of this at all.. but don't read every post.

There are routine scans you can have IT perform - chkdsk, sfc /scannow.. as it's a work PC it can't be some odd program you've installed or uninstalled. The new user check is to discriminate between a user profile issue and a general Windows problem.

Hi, I’m having the same problem too, I’m registering just to find a solution for this. It happen months ago, and thought window update might fixed it but it didn’t, this morning everything is fine until afternoon whenever I click on MS office files and PDF with the preview pane switch on, it’ll freeze windows explorer and not responding. When it’s off everything is fine. Other like image file is fine with preview pane on. It’ll back to normal after I restart my pc, but somehow this issue happen again and I don’t know what’s happening. May I know is there any fix to this issue already?

Hi, your Windows build number as prompted by the forum please?

Have you tried the new user check? (See above).

I'm not aware, as I said above, of a general bug- but hey, you could be using an Insider build..

    Hi, again, please try this:
Does this happen if you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user?
Which program is your default for pdf files?

On my other laptop I have both Intel and Nvidia, and both are shown in the Device Manager, for what that's worth..
If you search for info on HD Graphics missing you find e.g.
Enabling Intel Integrated Graphics | XSplit Support
How to open the Control Panel for Intel(R) Graphics

Sorry, not something I've come across before..

    I had this problem too

Narrowed it down to Windows 10 File Explorer hanging when accessing Microsoft Office modern files (v2007+) .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, and only when the preview pane was active (on).

For me it was ok to just turn off the the File Explorer "Details pane". Either by turning on the preview pane or turning them both off. That's a workaround, not a fix.

The thread where I found my answer: Question - File Explorer crashes when I open MS Office document | Tom's Hardware Forum

    quoted here:
For me File Explorer Hung forcing me to click X then close application.

Other file extensions worked perfectly: .wmv, .jpg, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, even .doc, .xls, .ppt.

Only ones that caused explorer to hang were: .docx, .xlsx, .pptx.

Clicking on them, right clicking on them, or double clicking (to open) them.

And only with Windows 10 File Explorer details pane turned on.

Windows version 1909 with current updates as of 12/13/2020.

Office 365 subscription with Office 2019 updated as of 12/13/2020.
