Win10 Start button, clicking on software doesn't return to the Desktop

Hi everyone, would somebody please be able to clarify why, when I click on the Start Button in order to start software, after I click on the software (Word, Photoshop etc) I then have to click back on the Start button (in order to come out of that area). Shouldn't it automatically launch the software and go directly to it?

Many thanks for any guidance, Chig.

    Something like this?
Start Menu Stuck on Desktop - Won't Exit

If your case is different, a screenshot could help. Thanks.

    Thank you @dalchina!

I can't see how a screen shot would help in this case, I'll see if I can re-phrase it: I click the Start button in order to open some software, and the full Start screen appears. When I then click on the software I wish to open, the Start screen stays open. I then have to either click the Start button or an app icon in the Taskbar, and THEN the Start screen closes, and I am taken back to the Desktop area. I am looking for a way to get the Start screen to close down automatically, without having to do that extra click (this is called auto-collapse in Photoshop).

I wasn't aware of the option to make the Start screen full size or smaller (one of the links from your suggestion). On making the Start screen smaller, it now does what I want it to do, close down again automatically. And like magic, now when I have the Start screen set to full-size again, it now auto-collapses as I wanted.

Possibly this is some glitch somewhere in my system, who knows. Very grateful for your tip! cheers, Chig
