    white icons on desktop

OK, I just redid windows 10, installed most of my programs, why are there white icons on the desktop? I have 13 icons, 10 are white, is it a corrupt file somewhere? I thought I would have a like new laptop when I did this but far from it, nothing but more problems.

    Sorry to hear that.

When you said redid Windows was this a clean install (with partitions deleted) or was this a reset.

You might try this to fix icons

Not sure what it was. I got this laptop Dec 22, 2018, 3 weeks later I got microsoft updates and could not do anything. Called HP and the person talked me through an inspection of the hard drive and then it was on to a system reset. I printed out a copy of those instructions and that's what I did on Sunday. Why are things so different?

I just tried step #1 and all it did was restart the laptop so I went for option #2 I copied & pasted the 3rd line and the laptop went black I can't do a thing, I'm on a tablet r7ght now what happened and how do I get the laptop working, I tried powering it off but it doesn't do anything.

Nevermind I got it back on held the power button in for a few seconds, guess I won't try step#2 anymore

Did HP reset instructions look like these?

    Reset Windows 10

What are the store policies for returns? If HP can't get a new device running and would make it their issue.

Your date of Dec. 22, 2018, usually means it's out of warranty unless the extended warranty was purchased. I discounted a typo of the year as 3 weeks haven't yet passed since Dec. 22, 2019.

As for white icons, I've found it usually means the path to the .exe file for the associated program has been lost, usually means a reinstall of those with the problem. Right-click each one and open Properties to see the path or use Find file location or even Change icon to see if you can locate that .exe file.

I did get the laptop on Dec 22, 2018 but purchased an extended warranty so I'm covered for either 2 or 3 yrs. The 2 options that were suggested to get rid of all the white icons didn't work too well, laptop went blank couldn't get it back on for maybe 10 min but after holding in the power button it did manage to come back on. I went to youtube and found a video on what to do to fix this but about half way through when asked to do something with the taxkbar it always disappeared and I was unable to do anything so I quit, it seems anything I do causes more problems.

Open the Command Prompt by typing cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.
Execute following commands one at time and restart your computer.

    Code:
    Del /F /Q /A %LOCALAPPDATA%\IconCache.db

    Del /F /Q /A %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\*.db

    Del /F /Q /A "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db"

    Reg Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\User Choice" /f
