Windows Explorer often freezes when moving files with mouse

My Win 10 Dell XPS8930 is very sick. Windows Explorer freezes almost at random when I am using the mouse, but I can get going again by restarting Explorer with Task Manager. SFC reports that some files are corrupt but cannot be fixed. DISM reports that the component store is repairable but I do not know how to find/use the WIM file which presumably contains the uncorrupted files. I also tried Restore but it never completed either successfully or unsuccessfully. What can I do next, please?

    Try this.

At Admin command prompt, copy and paste this and run it.

    Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then, run sfc /scannow again. Let us know if it fixed anything after the second SFC. Thanks.

Here is the DISM tutorial that should provide you the information you need.

Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

If you have 1809 boot media it may be simpler to run an inplace repair

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

If you don't have 1809 media following the inplace repair tutorial with new media will result in you upgrading to 1909.

Are you still running 1809 for a specific reason?

Suggest you perform a basic check on your disk, then on your file system.
    a. Get a copy of e.g. HDTune (free) and run the checks from the Health and Error Scan tabs.
    b. If ok, then from an admin command or Powershell prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan

This checks only. Post back if it fails.

You can get an iso file for 1809, should you wish to stay with that almost obsolete build, by searching for
    Heidoc iso downloader
    and using that.

    Possible success!

After re-running SFC /scannow I get this message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them". I haven't yet dared to see if the problem is fixed because I could lose this thread if it isn't. I will report back in 1/2 hour or so to say whether it has been or not. By the way - astonishing support from you all!

It can take up to three runnings of sfc /scannow to fix issues.

After that it is time for a different fix.

    Possible success! (sadly it wan't)

OK - the optimistic message was too optimistic. Am now running sfc twice more as suggested. The only reason I still have Win 1809 is that Windows hasn't invited me to upgrade. Would it be unsafe for me to upgrade while this silly mouse/freeze error is still unfixed?

You should reboot (restart) now to ensure the fixes remain fixed. After reboot, run SFC one more time to make sure it comes up clean. Only takes a few minutes. Let us know, Thanks.

Thread isn't going anywhere. We'll be here.

Please do not skip the elementary checks in my post #4 - just in case. No point in trying to fix files if there are more basic problems- that's building a house on sand.

    @hjpatten

Have to go for a while. Please make sure you have rebooted after the SFC has reported no errors and before other steps that may be needed. I'll check back later. Good luck.
