I suggest editing your question to clarify
1 What you mean by 'basic calculations'
2 Which search facility you are talking about - possibly File explorer search?

"Why don't basic calculations work as they did before?"

    Could you please clarify 'before'?

Before what? What about your PC has changed for you from when you were happy with this and now?

This is what I see (build 1903):

    Is this what you mean?

Despite the forum's new prompt, I think you haven't stated your current Windows build. What is it please?
Below your avatar it states 10240. Is it really that?
Windows 10 build 10240 is the official RTM build of the original release of Windows 10. This build was released on 2015-07-15 to Windows Insiders

@swarfega - Hi, which build were you using when you tried that? Thanks.

Cortana isn't turned off- it's now only voice activated. That will change again, probably later this year.

Thanks, could you post a screenshot for @Cromax to demonstrate a simple calculation on 1909 please?
@Cromax - similarly, could you post a screenshot showing what you see?
