It's OK to be wrong - that's why we are here.

You want an SSD. The larger, the better depending on your budget.

Some SSD manufacturers have SSD Caching software that they bundle with the unit but it is a complete waste - don't use it.
There is little or no speed advantage. Increasing the physical RAM in the system is a much better choice when combined with the SSD.

And please recycle that book, lol!

Ram disks were great in the xp or 7 days but SSD's are now faster then the ram in those days.
I not saying Ramdisks don't have a place. I have one on my main machine for temporary files.
reboot and all the temps are gone. saves a little on disk maintenance, but that's all.
I doubt you'll get much improvement in performance moving your desktop to a ramdisk
as whenever you click on a shortcut on the desktop it will call to disk .

There are plenty of tutorials here on improving performance, the main one I use on old
machines is to reduce animations (folder drag, etc).

I've used a RAMDisk but "way back" in the days of DOS to create a storage area for copying floppy disk contents to then reorganizing and copying back to clean disks as desired, much quicker than floppy drive to floppy drive. But that was in days when 4MB and 8MB RAM and 120MB and 210MB HDDs were common along with tape backup devices. Things got better in mid-'90 with 540MB HDDs but DOS could only partition and format up to 512MB, remainder could be a second partition.

Case in point -

With Windows 10 you don't need all the stuff - it's all built-in to the OS.
There are so many utilities and bloatware on the market, you have choose carefully.

I think some users are more concerned about not retaining files after a browsing session therefore writing files to a non persistent RAMdisk might make sense. As for performance - I tried moving the usual environment variables with only a slight increase in speed when running apps. So for me it's only useful to speed up browsers by moving browser cache.
