Hello, I am brand new one in here, and am here because I had Windows 10 rammed down my throat. OK, the real story is my ASUS Desk top became a real mess and I asked our local experts to fix it. They said it is a total mess and we really need to wipe it clean and start again. I said OK, and when I got it back my lazy easy Windows 8 was gone, and this whizzy Windows 10 was knocking my 78 year old brain to pieces. Now I have had many computers since 1999 and considered I had a reasonable grip on things but, this was like going from a 1920 Ford to a 2019 Mustang. OK that's it for now but, watch this space.
OK first query, How do I add more names into my folders. I clicked ADD up the top right, entered a new folder name on several occasions but it hasn't happened.
OK, in addition to my first quote above, I live in Carnarvon North West Australia, and right now the time is 10.50 pm so I may not stick around for to much longer.
But - I am new here. Shocking, really.
Point form info:
- Brit moved to Canada 30 yrs ago, retired Actuary (all irrelevent)
- been around 'puters a long time (wrote first code in '68 - Fortran and autocode on a KDF9)
- languages in decreasing order: English, French, APL2 (under TSO), Python (2.7 and 3+), Fortran, and smatterings of Spanish, Latin, COBOL, Visual Basic, Excel Macros, Basic and Modula-2; my recollections of IBM Assembler and KDF9 or Pegasus Autocode are too dim to count. Never tangled with C with or without pluses or Java etc.
- mostly 'self taught' other than 2nd year Comp Sci at Edinburgh (that's a warning folks!)
- currently migrating from a Win 7 machine to Win 10 and have hit a few road bumps - why I'm here
- hobbies & interests include wine & food, photography, economics finance & politics.
But enough about me.
Current Windows 10 issues are:
- where is a good Migration (from win 7) 101
- did I do a bad thing by renaming the user folder - I really need to use Richard not 'richa' so as not to break various backup and archiving tasks - it seems Ok so far
- trying to understand the file system (what exactly is "This computer" in Windows Explorer (eg This Computer\Desktop is NOT the same folder as C:\Users\Richard\Desktop -- a recipe for confusion)
- coming off a single drive machine (plus a fleet of external drives) to a dual drive machine SSD + HDD, wondering about the best way to organise that, and particularly the best folder structure on the HDD (D:)
- trying to understand the permissions system - when I mounted the backup image from the old PC I get a ton of 'access denied' errors, and am having to slog through 'taking ownership' of all the folders. That doesnt make sense to me. (It was mounted in write mode). Some folders were not a problem, but others were (including, interestingly my own folder!). And a few folders, mostly in AppData resist being taken control of , but that hasnt caused any issues yet.
I should have added that I was encouraged to try this forum by a very intelligent response to a post about high RAM usage when machine is idle - something that I was unsure about in my case (30%+ on a 16 GB machine). Small sample (!) but looks like good folks here.

I believe that it's still possible just to upgrade from W7 to W10, get appropriate W10 ISO, mount it and run setup.exe choose to keep files and programs.

"This computer" is just Windows Explorer , different link paths to same files in same places on the disk.

Can offer just my way of doing it. I keep just OS and most important programs/applications on SSD, all personal files on other disk(s). That's for several reasons:
SSDs are more expensive in terms of GB/$$ but so much faster where it counts that it makes huge difference.
Always kept personal files/data on at least another partition so not to have potential of loosing then if OS goes south. You know what the saying goes about eggs and a basket ? Also using several HDDs instead a larger one, it's only a question when a drive will go belly up, not when, hence offline disks for backups.
With regards to RAM usage, with 16GB and at (true) idle, shoudn't have more than 2.5-3GB usage, any more would mean a lot of resident programs running, most probably started with windows. It's also not unusual to have some "Memory leak" from a driver etc. That last one mostly doesn't show in Task manager so it's difficult to trace.

As for your questions, you got some good advices from Mike & Mike, but would get much better response, if you open new thread. Not that there aren't some similar threads already here, but every example has its own ups and downs.
Best way to migrate from 7 to 10 (for my way of using system) sounds like a good title
