Hey Z, aren't you over on page 1 as a newbie? …. I'm 4everjean, and I'm probably the newest newbie now! I share some of your IBM experience, only with Sys370 (avoiding 360 whenever possible), having hardware and software adventures in E. Fishkill, NY. In my last few years IBM was laughing at PCs, saying they would never catch on, and they weren't going to invest much time/attention on developing them. Then I had the first "PC-G" (graphics) plunked on my desk, with instructions to make it or break it. Took me 15 minutes to break it (and kill all the power in the hallway, twice). So that was the last I knew of their PC efforts, and boy was I glad to get that CRT monster off my desk.

Anyway, that's why monkeying with PCs is (relatively) new to me. Ah, if PCs would just fix themselves via updates/upgrades as they used to, until Win 7 support ended and we were pushed out into the desert without a canteen, forced to make use of the Windows 10 oasis, which is now forcing us into the Windows cloud ... which I trust enough to have invested in a personal, lives-under-my-desk cloud that nobody can hack into. I mean, it's important that I store my cats' names and food preferences in a safe place!

As I usually get myself into trouble trying to make changes better left for PC giants, I've done it again, but have read enough on TenForums to know this is the place for solutions I can trust. You guys are great! Especially that polite one who looks like an alien made of hard white plastic... So now I'm off to ask my question. Again, I'm so impressed with this site. With your help, even this old retired lady living in the shadow of NH's Mt. Washington can slay the (mostly self-created) PC dragons!

    Hi there @4everjean

    Welcome to the Forum

As far as IBM SyS 370 is concerned you can emulate IBM MVS/370 with the Hercules emulator and a thing called "The turnkey project" -- quite fun when you see JES2 with TSO and operator consoles running on a laptop PC !!!!!!!!! You can run IBM Assembler or even COBOL / PL/1 if you want -- great toy for playing with "The Big Blue" as it was known back then. For Consoles you'll need to install something like c3270 to emulate the 3277 type of consoles --- it's all in the project system.

    Installing MVS 3.8

Have fun and of course enjoy the Forum.

    Cheers

Welcome 4everjean. If you want a little nostalgia, I have OS/2 Warp 4 running in a VM (or I did, under Oracle Virtual Box). Not working at the moment under Hyper-V.

If you want to learn about or get help with Windows 10, this is the place to be. There are some scary smart people that hang out here but they have a knack of putting things in a way that makes it understandable to anyone.

Grab a chair, put your feet up and sit a spell.
