I"m new to this Windows Ten Forums. I'm from Midland, MI and am on disability. I'm not a programmer or anything, but I'm pretty much the de facto administrator around my house because my husband is basically computer illiterate, lol. He can surf the web, write e-mail and watch videos, but I'm pretty much the one who decides on the computers, the OS and who takes care of computer issues that don't require opening up the computer. I'm looking into either dual-booting Windows 7 Professional with either Windows 8.1 Professional or Windows 10 Professional whichever one works with our refurbished computer the best.

Hi and welcome to W10F. For dual boot i would strongly suggest another HDD or SSD for second OS installation, both. W7 and 8/8.1 should work with that system. W7 may be more practical though as W8/8.1 are too close to W10, don't see any reason to have it while W7 is of same vintage as that computer.

Thank you. I was thinking of the other partition on the hard drive that I have here. But I *was* thinking of getting an SSD drive over the holidays. The main reason I was asking and considering moving to Windows 10 or failing that to Windows 8.1 was that Windows 7 is reaching the "End of Life"/support next January, so no more security updates. Is there a particular reason you recommend another drive?

Another option is of course Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop environment, but I don't have a problem with Windows 10 or 8.1. other than if my computer can handle it with the Core 2 Duo processor.

Another concern is since this is our only computer that we use everything for, I've heard a lot of horror stories about the Anniversary updates going bad, that is bricking out of booting up at all. How often does this actually happen, and what are the chances of it happening, since they seem to be "rolling" updates? Any ideas and workarounds? That's a real concern, and does 8.1 do that too?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for not answering sooner. Main reason for separating OSs, specially when Linux is involved, is BOOT sector is changed with second OS installation and they can badly conflict when you update one or the other invariably screwing up one of them. It can be done but takes too much knowledge to do it.
Updates to W10 do go wrong but I haven't run into any.

    CountMike:

Thanks a lot. I'd heard that too. I'm really tempted to go with Windows 10 if at all possible, then Linux. I don't have a problem going with a separate Disk for each, since I was considering that anyway. It would make me feel better, lol. Thanks a million. As far as taking a while to get back to me, life happens! No biggie on my end. Thanks for getting back to me.

    Hello from James

    Good morning,

This is James. This is a very active community and I am looking forward to being a part of it.

I do not know much about computers, apart from the basics, but I have been told there is a lot one can and cannot do with Windows 10 :)

Looking forward to getting to know many of you

    Cheerios,
    James
