System doesn't come back from hibernation - 1909 issue?

Recently, whenever I hibernate my system, and then start it up again the next morning, Windows boots up as though I had done a complete shutdown. It may be only coincidental, but I upgraded to 1909 about a week ago.

It may well be coincidence. All my 1909 machines resume from hibernation successfully.

When resuming from hibernation the system state is restored from the hibernation file. Before it is loaded it is checked for integrity. If the check fails then a full startup is performed instead.

Reasons for failing an integrity check could be that the hiberfil.sys is too small to hold the whole of the system state. The upgrade to 1909 may have increased the memory in use slightly and it's now more than the hibefil.sys can hold. Another possible cause is that you have upgraded the RAM. The hiberfil.sys is by default 40% of the installed RAM, but won't automatically change to match the new size of RAM if you upgrade it. You have to reset the size yourself.

Try turning off hibernation, then turn it back on by setting the hibernation to type Full.

Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 10

Specify Hiberfile Type as Full or Reduced in Windows 10

So I followed all these instructions. Before I started, I look in my c:\ folder and there was no hiberfil.sys file present. OK, I thought. I must have deleted it.

I followed all the instructions for the "full" file and changed the advanced settings in the power plan like this:

Then I shut down the system using the Power Hibernate button, but the system failed to actually go into hibernation. And there is still no hiberfil.sys file present.

To be able to see hiberfil.sys you must first open File Explorer's Folder options. On the View tab, untick 'Hide protected operating system files'.

That setting worked. I can now see hiberfil.sys.

AND, I now have hibernation working. The key was to turn off the "Enable Fast Boot" option in the window that sets available functions for the Power button. SOLVED.
