Hmm, that seems to be tough circumstances. I live in a very rural area but within 5 miles we have two Walmarts, Office Depot, BestBuy and HHgregg.

The other day when I was in Office Depot they had a whole box of sticks by the cash register. I think they were also $5 - but I did not check their sizes.

It is strange but the more "city" you are the fewer discount outlets. I've had people pull over their cars to ask me where there's a Walmart. Other than The Shack(tm) the electronics stores I've tried locally use high pressure/rip-off sales techniques. On Flagler St. downtown Miami if you ask one of the store employees where some well known store is, like 90% of the time they will just stop talking and ignore you. The philosophy is like "why should I help you spend your money someplace else?"

I'm hopeful that I'll be able to hit the brick and mortar tech and office type stores regularly soon. I think in Miami the only people who actually pay the $100 for the Transit Pass are tourists. Anyone else I ask answers "I know a guy who works there..."

It's my understanding armed forces veterans get them free. So if you do pay the hundred bucks you feel like a fool. Like the only non-tourist in town paying for the full enchilada.

I think London started the nuisance of charging for using their streets. But don't you have other options - e.g. going the other way away from Miami.

There is a Best Buy and from what I hear a CompUSA that can be reached via Metro Rail. A one day pass is $5. So that kind of kills the discount unless you can lug a lot of stuff in one trip. To get to Walmart and stores like Office Depot you need to take the bus. Same thing, either a day pass for $5 or $2.25 one way. So might as well shell out the 50 cents in case you get off at the wrong stop.

The free transportation, MetroMover, basically goes in circles around the downtown. Going from downtown to Brikkel section takes about 20 minutes on the MetroMover. On a bicycle it would probably take you 5 and by car like 2. It's crazy. The "inner loop" goes clockwise and the outer loop goes counter-clockwise. It tool me about 8 months living in Miami to figure the thing out. But anyway, it does not go to any shopping centers.

It's tough to even find a local hardware store. It's definitely a strange town.
