Taskbar Search stopped working after V1909/KB4517245 update?

My winver is 1903 OS 18362.476.

The task bar search no longer accepts text input after the V1909/KB4517245 Enablement Package went in?

I have sort of gotten dependent on that search box by using it to find and activate everything.

I have had to learn other ways to run things like using task manager to run powershell and cmd in administrator mode.

I am clueless on this one.

I also noticed that Cortana had activated and wanted me to configure the microphone I do not have?

I removed KB4517245 and manually cleared file explorer search history using regedit because it to was broken.

The file explorer search options, which clear history, are only available when a search is initiated and I could not initiate a search.

I suspect V1909 and V1903 registry search history settings may be incompatible?
They definitely looked different to me.

Recommendations for recovering the task bar search?
Maybe it is has an incompatible search history also?

I tried that; didn't work, maybe I need to do something else 1st?

I will try this instead ...

    A) Uninstall cortana and/or Un-register it or disable it, if possible.
    B) Sign out and Log in under " Repair Profile" user.
    C) Open user packages for Cortana and then delete its files in folder "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy"
    D) Reboot and sign in as myself
    E) re-register Cortana?

Will let you know if that works any better.

Oh well, worth a 2nd try I guess.

I could not figure out how to un-install it so I used group edit to disable it.

    I did re-register it

I left it disabled. The Task Bar Search Box still DOA.

Reinstall and Re-register Cortana in Windows 10

The above post recommended an In-Place Upgrade. I have never actually tried that.

I was thinking about booting off the V1903 ISO and doing the repair? Windows would then be shut down.

Which do you think is better/safer?

I think this problem may be caused by Edge?

Faulting application name: SearchUI.exe, version: 10.0.18362.418, time stamp: 0x5d995690
Faulting module name: edgehtml.dll, version: 11.0.18362.449, time stamp: 0x16d87cfd

    Fault offset: 0x000000000033ea46
    Faulting process id: 0x1dc4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d5a7e0db70edfa
    Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\SearchUI.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\edgehtml.dll
    Report Id: adf5207c-3ed9-4008-ab31-2bd8f0ef0ac7
    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.13.0.18362_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy
    Faulting package-relative application ID: CortanaUI

I am not exactly certain how to proceed.

I have reinstalled Edge and Cortana, but maybe I need terminate them, delete associated package folder's and dll's 1st, reboot and reinstall edge followed by cortana and reboot again.

    Thanks for the link.

The problem is that I can not find any definitive information about "Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade".

I have visited many different web sites and the descriptions of what it is, what it does and even how to do it are all contradictory.

I suspect part of the problem may be that the "In-place Upgrade" has been re-purposed many times during its life cycle and even the terminology used for the two recovery options have changed meanings over the years. i.e. "Reset", "Refresh" and even a third term that was retired and is no longer used that I am unable to recall and was confused by.

The aforementioned write up by TenForums "Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade" states the "Refresh" will wipe your apps ["no longer preserves user-acquired Windows apps"] and "Reset" will wipe your drives ["removing all user accounts and contents"].

This sort of invalidates any usefulness of doing an " In-place Upgrade" if that is true, and TenForums is probably correct!

The "push-button reset" offered by Microsoft is tantalizing, but I could not figure out how that is done. I probably either missed the write up on how to do it or the terminology has changed or the option is no longer valid as possibly hinted at by TenForums if I understood it correctly.

I have been fixing other Window errors like the missing folder for the Tile Repository, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database".

I was hoping that might actually fix something other than the error message itself.

You don't need to reboot just insert the Windows 10 Media and then execute Setup.exe to perform upgrade from booted Windows 10.
