    New Laptop Buying Advice

Wondering if anyone could offer some advice please. I am looking at buying a new laptop as my current HP is on it's last legs. With the Black Friday deals, now seems to be a good time. I have found two deals that seem to me to be fairly good but am not sure which is the best way to go. Basically, I am torn between an i5 10th gen or an i7 8th gen. These are the two I am considering.

    HP Pavilion 14-ce3504sa with i5 (10th gen)-1035G1 Processor, Quad-core, 1 GHz/3.6 GHz, 6 MB cache
    or
ASUS VivoBook 14 X409FA-EK149T with Intel Core i7 (8th Gen) 8565U/1.8GHz Max Turbo Speed 4.6GHz QuadCore Processor

I am totally non technical and don't really understand what it all means. I just want something that will load fast. I don't play a lot of games, but do stream movies and shows etc. And my biggest thing is that I often have several windows open (6/7), each with up to 10 tabs.

If anyone could offer me any advice I would be very appreciative - no point going to a shop i.e. Currys, as they obviously want to sell their product and I don't ever feel I am getting unbiased advice.

    Thank you

I always recommend the business laptops. I find that the home laptops are poor, bordering on junk. You pay much less than for a business laptop ... but the home laptops collapse long before the business laptops.

In short, a penny saved is a headache bought. I will NEVER AGAIN buy a cheap home laptop. Been there. Done that. Never again.

Business laptops generally start somewhere around $1000. If that's too much ... perhaps you might consider a desktop. Better built. More power for the money. Longer lasting. Better graphics. Better everything. So I guess that the question is: Do you really need to carry a computer around?

BTW, you haven't said how much you're able to spend.

    Sorry if I missed something.
No to a desktop, no room for one and need to take with me when I go out sometimes.
The 2 models I am looking at - the HP is £499 and the Asus is £529, so no more than that.
I think the most important question is if an i5 10th gen is better/faster than an i7 8th gen.

The HP has 32GB optane memory and better WiFi card. It would probably perform better than the Asus.

You might want to consider a laptop with AMD Ryzen, I recently replaced my laptop with a Ryzen based unit. Surprisingly snappy and out performs the other Intel based laptop we have that my wife uses...the one I got is a Dell, I did replace the slow spinner with an SSD, added an M.2 for storage, and maxed the ram, it rips....not all that expensive even with the upgrades...

As loathe as I am to recommend an HP, I have to agree with NavyLCDR in this case. The HP will likely outperform the ASUS. Just make sure to buy and extended warranty, would be my advice.

Better buy a good quality product with a appropriate hardware.
You will probably never need more than a 8G of memory and a i5. A SSD is a must have, specially on laptops.

What you use the laptop for? Witch is the most hardware demanding software? Do you intent to play games on it?

The Passmark CPU scores for those 2 processors are quite close.

I'd make the choice based on other factors. I wouldn't make a big deal out of the Intel processor generation unless you have some unusual circumstance.

For the last 8 - 10 years I've used HP business notebooks.
There were problems with Dell and HP consumer notebooks.
And there were problems with the HP business notebooks.
The difference was the 3 year warranty.
In addition the technician travels to your location to perform the repairs.
