How do i stop windows Update messing with my desktop

I am running the latest version of windows 10, (1903 build 18362.476) and 2 days ago windows decided to update. all went OK with the update but when i started my PC i saw it had removed all the icons on the task bar, it has also put the computer into tablet mode and removed most of the icons on my start menu and moved the rest all over the place

Is there a way to stop this happening again please

    Hi, which update was this?

Was it a feature update to build 1903 from an older build, or a cumulative update?

You can see from your Update History.

    Thanks.

Microsoft has fallen on bad times with their updates. Fail after fail. Abyssmal.

Just disable updates until the smoke clears.

That was the update to 1909. Since you were already on 1903, it was delivered as a CU, not a full-fledged 'Feature Update' - this seems to be a one-time thing, and 2003 will be delivered as usual as a FU.

That said, I don't know why your desktop got messed up. If you lurk on the Windows 10 News subforum, you'll see that people have plenty of issues with this update, but I've not heard anyone reporting something like this.

But I doubt anyone knows why it happened. Windows, and Windows Update, has a mind of its own. I doubt that even anyone at MS on the Windows dev teams knows what happened. It's indeterminant, it's overly complicated, it's... CHAOS!

The effect sounds more like that of a feature update (upgrade) which is that number too.

What is your current build number?

However, if that's just the update you mention, nothing reported here that's adverse - I could have missed something as I just did 2 or 3 thread searches:
    KB4524570 CU Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.476 & v1909 build 18363.476

As margrave55 said, you could live in a tin box and shield yourself from all Windows updates... or as you have Pro, set updates to Notify in Group Policy (shich I do).

However that would imply at some point you do accept updates, and as nothing adverse was reported, you couldn't anticipate it.

To give you a way back:
    if it was an upgrade:
    - consider you might have been allocated a temporary user profile (see below) - if so, this can probably be corrected.
    - you can 'Go back to the previous build'

    if it's just an update:
    - uninstalling it might reverse what you're seeing
    - you might be able to use System Restore- if it completes successfully
    - you hopefully have a recent disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid) ) - if so you could restore that- but it restores potentially older versions of data - everything on the partition restored.

removed most of the icons on my start menu
    - if you look at the list of installed programs, is everything you expect listed?
    - and you personal data in Documents etc?

    If you run this
    echo %userprofile%
at a command prompt, is your user profile folder the correct one?

You might run winver and see if you got the 1909 upgrade - I thought it was delivered to everyone on Patch Tuesday, but it might be you had to agree to it. If not, Dalchina's advice certainly applies.

By the way, notice that the CU was called 'November 12, 2019—KB4524570 (OS Builds 18362.476 and 18363.476)'

Just to add to the confusion, MS decided to give 1903 and 1909 the same build number (476), because, as MS puts it, '1903 and 1909 both use the same servicing stack'. 18362.x is 1903, 18363.x is 1909.

Again, this mess is supposedly a one-off, and things will go back to the usual method of upgrading Feature Updates. Something got jumbled up in the development between 1903 and 1909. The Insiders Program was a very strange hot mess for a while - it seems to have settled down to 'normal'.

    @sam02

Has anybody suggested to the OP that he may have accidentally put his machine into Tablet Mode? What he describes sounds very much like it. If he comes back, perhaps a quick check in the Action Center to see if that button is highlighted may give a clue.
