Document shortcuts all in one place

    hi,

While I have hundreds of documents on my pc, I'm typically working with around 20 documents. These 20 docs are sensibly ordered [scattered] across different folders, some local and some in the cloud. I want a quick place to access all 20 or so documents INSTANTLY.

At the moment I have to treapse (this is terrible hardship I know, spare me pity!) through Windows Explorer, navigate through folders and find what I want (or alternatively setup pinned/favourites/use recently opened in some Apps). I like to work quickly and efficiently and I'm sure this process can be improved.

Please, what is the best way to collate and present say 20 document shortcuts in Windows 10?
In old versions of Windows I used to know flags to open an explorer window without navigation pane. Is this still possible today?
Another idea I pondered was how to launch shortcuts from within html (as it's easy to edit). But at the moment it seems browsers don't support launch of windows apps - perhaps there's a method I haven't seen?

I appreciate a common solution is putting these shortcuts all on the desktop, but this defaces an otherwise clean & tidy desktop.

There must be a better way?

    Thanks

Hi, you could create a new taskbar toolbar based on a folder containing your shortcuts.

Here I've created a folder containing 3 shortcuts.

Rt click tackbar, create new toolbar, browse to that folder, click Select folder
    - creates the toolbar ringed in red.

Clicking the >> shows the shortcuts.

Rt clicking a shortcut lets you open the location of the corresponding file.
Left clicking it opens the file.

Perhaps you can make a batch file to open all your 20 documents at once.

    - Open notepad

    - Copy paste the following:
    Code:
    @echo off
    start "" "D:\Docs\doc1.docx"
    start "" "D:\Docs\doc2.docx"
    start "" "D:\Docs\doc3.docx"
Replace path with your own file locations of course.

    - Save as .bat file and execute.

@dalchina, @Try3, good idea thanks. I already use the additional toolbar for app shortcuts and it's great.... but.. it's a slight fiddle in that compared to other taskbar icons the >> is a very small clickable area which requires greater accuracy (slightly annoying when using lots of time in a day) & also all the icons within the toolbar are tiny.

@greentea, That's a good option for opening 20 shortcuts, thanks. But then my taskbar is most unpleasant (too many open apps). Instead I need method to view and open certain docs (which I'll open/close rather than leaving open).

Someone previously told me of linkbar (a freeware tool). This looks like a good idea. But I'm concerned about system security/stability and don't want to install software from an unknown source. Else that would be good

    Thank you from

    Mr Awkward/Difficult to please...!

If you want only a Windows solution I think you've got the only one. Excluding 3rd party severely limits your options.

Why not create the folder containing shortcuts and have it accessible from the start menu?

    Example using Open Shell:

(Not sure this can work so well with Win 10's start menu - and Open Shell is 3rd party, so that's no good for you...)

Note: it always helps when posting to state what solutions are unacceptable to you. Thank you.

Then just chuck all your shortcuts in a folder on your desktop and set its folder view to Extra large icons.

hi dalchina, I'm open to non microsoft if it comes from a reputable source (e.g. a known brand). As an example I'd use SysInternals long before they became MS owned. But I don't know how to assess a fairly unidentified developer on github. Who knows what else the tool may be doing today, or might start doing in the future.
@dalchina I will look into the Open Shell option.

    Thanks

    @TairikuOkami Great solution, thank you.

With Excel it shows recent files despite my preferences not to show recents. And if I manually remove recents, they show up again!
I found this web page describes how to disable all jump list recents (rather dramatic setting as does all apps, shame it doesn't just respect the MS app setting) anyway: Delete or Clear Jump List Recent Items in Windows 7, 8 & 10
