PC hits black screen on boot, visual artifacts and freezing

Hi, so for the past week or so my PC has been having problems with random freezing and visual glitches/artifacts appearing on screen when I'm using it. Often it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes just a quick freeze/flicker but a few times the screen completely froze with lines everywhere, forcing me to do a hard shutdown.

Well, yesterday is when it went from bad to worse. I was watching a video and the screen and sound suddenly froze, and the screen went a strange brown colour with lines everywhere and I had to hard shutdown. When I booted back up, I encountered a black screen before I could even log on, and had to force shutdown again. Booted up again, same thing. After a third shutdown it began automatic repairs, and after trying to restart normally I once again encountered the black screen. So then I tried going into safe mode with networking and it let me log on as normal, except there were strange green lines everywhere, and on various apps after logging onto the desktop. These are always here now everytime I log on.

This is what it looks like when I restart in safe mode with networking:

    A few things I've tried/ruled out:
    • I've ran malware scans and nothing came up, so it doesn't look to be a virus
    • I've tried using a spare monitor and the same problems came up, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with my monitor
    • I've uninstalled my graphics drivers by going onto the device manager and hitting uninstall on my display adapter - after restarting, I'm able to boot up normally and log on at a lower resolution, but after a few minutes of being on the desktop the screen just goes black like before (perhaps because it's reinstalled the drivers?)

I'm running Windows 10 64-bit, version 1903 (OS Build 18362.476). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi boombastik, I'm not sure what you mean by that. There are no stickers on my keyboard apart from the label on the bottom.

Check your Reliability History for any entries which may be relevant.
Then type in "dxdiag" in the lower left search bar to get your graphic card details and also have a look at the Display page for any info.
Download the latest drivers for your card only from the maker's site.
Use Display driver uninstaller,in Safe mode only,to completely remove the old drivers.
Then reinstall the new driver package.

Goto main Asus Website and see their graphics driver support for the 270x. Pretty sure it stopped around Windows 8.1 sometime. Maybe try to backdate the cards drivers to about 17.2. Optimal driver in my mind.

Reliability Monitor is showing A LOT of hardware errors from the past few days, all with the "LiveKernelEvent" Problem Event Name.

Dxdiag isn't giving me much info, in fact it seems to only show info about "Microsoft Basic Display Driver" on the display page.

I used the DDU tool to uninstall the graphics drivers in safe mode, then reinstalled the latest drivers from AMD's site. Seemed to be going well until I hit an endless black screen midway through the installation.

Driver support for the R9 270X is still ongoing, they have drivers for Windows 10 which I've been using.

You have a driver problem. The dxdiag Display page should show driver version etc. on the right hand side of the page.Perhaps if you can physically uninstall the card and re-install,then check Device manager>display adapter and see if the correct driver has been installed. The "Microsoft basic driver"should only be a last resort,e.g. safe mode.

Ok, so I took out the graphics card, cleaned off the dust and then reinstalled it. As far as I can tell, this did absolutely nothing. I'm still hitting the black screen. The device does show up in Device Manager with what appear to be up-to-date drivers, but dxdiag is still only giving me info about "Microsoft Basic Display Driver".
This is what it shows on the right hand side of the page:

So what you're saying is, being in safe mode will cause this to happen? If that's the case.. it's because I am in safe mode lol. Like I said, if I try to boot up the PC normally, I'll just hit a black screen before I even reach the log in screen, only way to bypass this is by going into safe mode. I can uninstall my graphics drivers which will then let me restart normally, but what use is dxdiag if my drivers aren't installed?

Hi Grom0X, my GPU is the R9 270X but I don't think it's from ASUS, I've never downloaded any drivers from them, only from AMD.
