Have you used Task Scheduler to copy files from one drive to another?

New Win10 v.1903 user with a new computer with two internal drives, C and D.

Before experimenting with this myself, has anyone had success using task scheduler to copy a file from one internal drive to another, separate internal drive? QuickBooks doesn't appear to play nice when its data files aren't residing on the same drive as the program file, and my third-party backup service will only back up one drive on their basic service tier (and it doesn't really make sense to upgrade for a few files).

As a workaround I thought perhaps Windows task scheduler could be used to automate the copying of the QuickBooks files from Drive C: to Drive D: so they would then be backed up.

Has anyone successfully copied files this way across separate drives, and if so, would you be willing to share the steps you took?

    Thank you.

Yes & yes. I do this every hour.

I get Task scheduler to run a batch file that contains the commands. You just put the batch file as your Action in Task scheduler.

Because I want the batch file to run without disrupting whatever I happen to be doing at the time, I get it to run the batch file minimised and also with a specific icon [so I recognise what it is running]. My suggestions for this refinement are in
Make Task scheduler run a batch file minimised and with a specific icon - TenForums

The contents of the batch file depend on exactly what you are doing. I use some xcopy commands and some RoboCopy commands. You can get the syntax for these by entering this in a command prompt -
    Code:
    xcopy /?
    and
    Code:
    robocopy /?
and you can get further guidance at command index - SS64

Although Try3 got here first, I am also running a backup (in my case nightly) using a batch file running xcopy. I am only adding my response because I experienced some difficulty getting the task to run, due to problems with setting the credentials it runs with (as I am not often logged in at 5:55am). If you have issues with that, I may be able to help (but don't know enough to write a guide, only to know what eventually worked for me). Martin

Try3, mngerhold, thank you for the quick responses. I'm going to work on this later in the week (and may be back with a few questions).

You might also be interested in Cobian 11 Gravity ( CobianSoft - The home of Cobian Backup ). It's a per file backup / copy program, very easy to set up and use. I've used it for at least 10 years for some of my backup needs.

As the treasurer for our church I use QuickBooks and when closing always use its back-up of the data file to a USB Thumb drive that I keep off-site. I also have QB installed on a Notebook kept off-site and updated from that Thumb drive.

Berton, thank you for the reply. I'm using a third-party service to back up all my data files to the cloud. When I exit QB, I specify "local backup" to an internal drive, but then the third-party service looks for new files and files that have changed, and those files are automatically backed up. It just saves time over a manual backup to external media for multiple files.

Multiple files is always time consuming, I only have to do one of just under 20MB.
