icon limitations in windows 10 home edition

I made an icon as a gif as some of it is see thru, then online converted it to icon.
This will be a desktop link to a folder, there will be several.
What are the limitations set by ms for desktop icons?
    Size? Etc height? Width?
How do I prevent the icon name from appearing?
    Thanks all

I tried an animated gif but when converted to ico it no longer moved.
    Are animated icon links doable?
    Thanks

I found all I had to do is change the image of the folder! As the folder is on the desktop.
Are there limits for that image?
    Thanks

Try to use at least a 256X256 image, convert it to .ico in multi size...

that way it will conform properly to different size criteria, eg. small, medium, large icons...

    For the most part, No!
Just use a similar .ico image.

    However, I have had it before that, if I didn't apply a custom folder icon to a new folder when it was empty, it often wouldn't work, something to do with it changing from a live folder to a still image;
henceforth, you won't see half open folders with contents partially visible.

The folder and it's custom icon will, however, show throughout Explorer...

    Thanks
I also found that by changing the image that is a folder, the folder must have a name. i prefer no name on the folder or icon link. is that doable? as a folder image it does accept - as a name but i will have maybe 18 of them and i am sure it wont let me name more that one as - .

Rename the folder Alt+255 (on the numerical keypad with NUMLOCK on!) then release Alt and press Enter...

I don't know about lots, but, you can try a few with blank names...

There are 2 Alt Codes, that I know of, that create blank names - Alt255 and Alt0160, (Alt Codes must be invoked by holding Alt while punching out the numbers on the numeric keypad with NUMLOCK on then releasing.)

    so...,

try naming another folder holding Alt and pressing 255 then release, press and hold Alt again and press 255 then release again then press Enter...

so, the folder's name is blank blank, Alt255 x2...

then you could try Alt255 Alt0160...

    or, Alt0160 Alt255 Alt0160, etc...

Note: I've had it before, where I tried several different combinations and it backfired, as if Windows didn't understand the logic!

Play around with some combo's, see what happens!

Another solution is to have the background the same colour as the text. how do i change the colour of the text?
    thanks

looks like that would mean changing the registry. dont want to do that!

Renaming files did not go well. After a few it would say there is another file with that name, but sometimes it did work. I quit when I realised I have 16 files and I would lose count!
    Thanks for your help
