like NavyLCDR said above - registering the recovery tools (windowsRe/winre.wim) has/had nothing to do with booting
only noted as needing to be reset/re-registered

you were right - it booted fine switched to UEFI, after the troubles with sleep on this system forced it lol.. 'Sleep' on this one means 'drain battery'. So, its good for this exercise. Appreciate all the help
Actually, after looking through the event log, on that particular occasion something [wud?] awakened the system several times across that particular time period, then after awhile it would return to sleep, then wash/rinse/repeat. I"ve not seen that again. The sleep drain ordinarily isn't any worse than others I've had, though the batt life overall for text use [not running full-frame videos etc] is about 5.5 hours, which is half what my Asus ultrabook gets. still, for the market, not terrible.
I wouldn't recommend this line of Dell Latitude for two main reasons:
1. they have device-wake-from-sleep issues that cannot be resolved with anything known currently. Very inconvenient and annoying
2. the 1920x1080 non-touch display panel, which is rumored to be IPS, is not sharp, and produces really pale, washed-out looking fonts. It is awful bright... lots of headroom.
and I dunno what's going on with the BIOS... the slowest part of the shutdown/restart/bootup cycle is the bios itself... stays dark awhile, shows the Dell logo, goes dark, shows logo again, then finally does what you invoked.... probably patches on patches

just exhuming htis thread cos it's the issue i have, and i'm puzzling over the solution.
i've done the conversion to GPT but got the error
"MBR2GPT: Failed to update ReAgent.xml, please try to manually disable and enable "
i've pushed on, disabled my CSM etc and rebooted ok, but was wondering what to do to get this in order - the solution in post #2 says "set drive letter to recovery partition" but when i right click mine, i only get a "help" option

It looks like the way that was done was to temporarily allocate a drive letter to the recovery partition, then execute the command.

That's a design limitation of Disk Management. You need a 3rd party partition manager, like Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.
Then you can easily do this, and more.
It's usually best - and indeed necessary- to use a 3rd party partition manager when working with system partitions.
There is another way to do that, and that's using the partition number.
