Failure to get past windows logo screen
Hi
Not sure this is the right forum as I cannot actually successfully get to windows desktop.
A few weeks ago I started to get screen freezes once into the windows desktop. Sometimes immediately and other times when machine left to idle. I don't use hibernation. These were resolved by a restart and I clearly should have paid more attention then. Initially I thought it was the latest Windows update which was causing this, but maybe not.
Can't get into to verify windows version but should be latest Win 10 pro.
What happens now:
Drive is encrypted with truecrypt and after the post screens the prompt to enter the TC key is displayed and appears to work. Windows logo appears but machine goes straight into scan & repair C:. This completes pretty quickly and then machine reboots and (having entered TC key again) it goes into Prep for auto repair. The Blue Screen but not the BSOD.
System restore fails
- Uninstalling updates - both fail and just give messages leading to reset PC
- System Image recovery - Not found maybe due to encryption?
- Start up repair doesn't work
- What can I do with the Command Prompt?! Have tried running SFC from there > said 100% complete but with message that "Windows Restore Protection could not perform the requested operation". Probably why it finished so fast!
The tried DISM /online /cleanup image /checkHealth this gave error 50 " DISM does not support servicing windows PE with the online option."Interestingly in the command prompt windows the drive is shown as X which as far as I know is the truecrypt encrypted volume letter for the fisrt of my data drives, D when mounted.Have tried to change directory to C but this does not appear to be working.
Where I am at now
Regardless of cause of this, corrupted system drive, something to do with TC encryption or windows update/hardware issues, I am thinking of changing PC in any case. No worries with data. Have that all copied elsewhere. BUT I need to get my windows 10 pro (digital ?) licence key so as not to have to buy Win10 Pro if possible. I thought I had this recorded somewhere and I am still looking. This machine is running on a Win7 pro RETAIL install upgraded to win10pro retail licence (or digital key?) in the period when MS was offering this for free.
Now cannot remember what I need to install this on a new machine. I still have the relevant Win 7 pro retail disks. If I can still use these disks to create a new Win10 Pro licence on a new machine whatever is wrong with the system drive is not a huge issue, maybe apart from the deactivation of MS Office licence but maybe I can do that through my MS account.
Any help you can give much appreciated.
