Failure to get past windows logo screen

    Hi

Not sure this is the right forum as I cannot actually successfully get to windows desktop.

A few weeks ago I started to get screen freezes once into the windows desktop. Sometimes immediately and other times when machine left to idle. I don't use hibernation. These were resolved by a restart and I clearly should have paid more attention then. Initially I thought it was the latest Windows update which was causing this, but maybe not.

Can't get into to verify windows version but should be latest Win 10 pro.

    What happens now:

Drive is encrypted with truecrypt and after the post screens the prompt to enter the TC key is displayed and appears to work. Windows logo appears but machine goes straight into scan & repair C:. This completes pretty quickly and then machine reboots and (having entered TC key again) it goes into Prep for auto repair. The Blue Screen but not the BSOD.

    System restore fails
    1. Uninstalling updates - both fail and just give messages leading to reset PC
    2. System Image recovery - Not found maybe due to encryption?
    3. Start up repair doesn't work
    4. What can I do with the Command Prompt?! Have tried running SFC from there > said 100% complete but with message that "Windows Restore Protection could not perform the requested operation". Probably why it finished so fast!

The tried DISM /online /cleanup image /checkHealth this gave error 50 " DISM does not support servicing windows PE with the online option."
Interestingly in the command prompt windows the drive is shown as X which as far as I know is the truecrypt encrypted volume letter for the fisrt of my data drives, D when mounted.
Have tried to change directory to C but this does not appear to be working.

    Where I am at now
Regardless of cause of this, corrupted system drive, something to do with TC encryption or windows update/hardware issues, I am thinking of changing PC in any case. No worries with data. Have that all copied elsewhere. BUT I need to get my windows 10 pro (digital ?) licence key so as not to have to buy Win10 Pro if possible. I thought I had this recorded somewhere and I am still looking. This machine is running on a Win7 pro RETAIL install upgraded to win10pro retail licence (or digital key?) in the period when MS was offering this for free.

Now cannot remember what I need to install this on a new machine. I still have the relevant Win 7 pro retail disks. If I can still use these disks to create a new Win10 Pro licence on a new machine whatever is wrong with the system drive is not a huge issue, maybe apart from the deactivation of MS Office licence but maybe I can do that through my MS account.

Any help you can give much appreciated.

When Windows 7 is upgraded to Windows 10 it creates licensing information on the Microsoft servers.
A clean install then should be able to performed.

    Options now are:
    1) perform reset save files equivalent with a Windows 10 iso
    2) perform a clean install
    3) backing up important files to another drive or the cloud
    4) troubleshooting the boot failure

On same or any machine? Retail licence should allow me to install on any but does that apply to the created licencing information? This was not a standard upgrade but the free upgrade offered at the start of windows 10 for those with a windows 7 licence.

If you upgraded a licensed Windows 7 to 10 then you should have licensing information on Microsoft servers.
This then would enable you to replace a failed drive or clean install.

Yes, I have a machine like that. The free upgrade to W10 gave that machine a digital entitlement (now called a digital licence). This is stored on Microsoft's update servers and is linked to the machine's unique hardware ID. A clean install of the same edition (Home or Pro), skipping entering a key when asked, will activate automatically from that digital licence as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

There isn't a problem transferring to a new machine.I've built a totally new one, haven't changed my specs yet and did not have any problems with the digital licence.

Hi thanks for this which gets to the nub of my query.....

The point being that I will be getting a new machine. And the point of a full retail licence is that it can be moved to a different machine/hardware, which is why one pays more for this sort of licence. The on top the free upgrade to Win 10 pro FULL RETAIL licence adds another layer...

So my question, which may not have been very clear, was about the mechanism, how it works, what I have to enter when installing on the new machine?

I am assuming that I can download the latest windows 10 Pro iso install from that and when the licencing is verified enter....what?, the original windows 7 key, another digital licence key that I should have recorded before the current machine failed? I am still looking for the information I recorded about this that I thought gave me the answer but it was quiet a few years ago .

A Windows operating system that came preinstalled can be upgraded from 7 or 8 to 10 for free.
During the upgrade process the licensing information becomes digital and remains on the Microsoft servers.
There are no transfer rights with these OEM versions.

In contrast retail versions can be transferred to another computer by deactivation and reactivation.
Running the command slmgr.vbs /upk deactivates the version.
This allows the movement of the retail version to another computer.
On the new computer a new activation needs to occur.
For example, running the activation troubleshooter or contacting Microsoft.

Approximately one month ago I ran slmgr.vbs /upk on an OEM version.
This was followed by running the activation troubleshooter (ran twice).
Then everything was back to normal.

Thanks for that but as per first post, can't boot the machine that has ths current activated copy!!

Are there options for this scenario?

See if you can move the drive to a HD enclosure or a bay of a working computer.

It may be possible to find the needed information by running:
