Would Like Opinions on PC Laptop

I have a desktop computer, and plan to buy my first laptop. I want something simple with a large screen that is reliable. I'm a senior and my eyesight is not good enough for small screens. My desktop is a 21 inch.

Today I saw an HP 17.3", SKU# 635661 at Best Buy for $579.99. Walmart has the same one, only sold and shipped by another company. I wanted to get a good brand, my desktop is HP and my old desktop was Lenovo. I didn't see any Lenovos with that large of a screen. I don't like Dells.

I'm just getting a laptop so I'm not confined to my den when I want to use the computer. I won't be using it too much, don't stream, watch movies or concerts online.

Do you think this is a good computer to buy? I have little computer knowledge and only need the basics, no gaming, no touchscreen, don't need a lot of memory, etc. I thought 8 GB would be enough. Not sure about the battery life of this computer.

Any advice on this purchase? Thanks.

I have two HP 17.3 with Windows 10 and I wouldn't trade them for anything else. Set the font resolution to 125%, helps the old eyes...

This one? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-17-3...?skuId=6356671 (You missed a digit for the SKU.)

Looks pretty good. Core I5, 256 GB SSD, 1600X900.

Yes, Bobkn, that's the one. I didn't see mentioned how long the battery lasts, and I assume these types of laptops can be used with a mouse also, not sure I'll master the built in one.

That's good to hear, and thanks for the tip. That's what I have my desktop set at.

Only issue I see is the OS, Windows 10 Home in S mode.

As mentioned in the link, and confirmed here, you can switch out of S mode, at no charge. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...-in-s-mode-faq

As found in some threads here on Ten Forums, you may need to update the Store first. The old version that comes with with the pre-installed Windows 10 in S mode may fail to work when trying to switch out of S Mode.

    Bree,

How do you update the "Store" in case I run into that situation? I have run across a few people with S-Mode and had no issues getting them out of it. At one point Costco had a sale on laptops with S-Mode and people did not realize what they were getting.

I just bought a new HP Pro Book. I was advised to buy the workplace PC version which tends to be built to a higher standard with better warranty support for much the same price / performance as the consumer range. Consider the HP ProBook and Dell Latitude ranges. My Probook was supplied with Windows 10 Pro and has the same price / features as the similar HP Pavilion range. I suggest you avoid compact glued / bonded laptops which are very difficult to fix and upgrade.

I second getting a "business" version. I bought a HP mini workstation. Support is here in the U.S. They have been great so far.
