I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T430s which I won in a raffle when our employer was getting rid of it's old laptops a few years ago (they do this every few years). Anyway, it's 7 years old and still runs extremely well. New Thinkpads aren't cheap but they are built to last.

I've been retired for about 10 years but the last 6 working years I used Thinkpads of various models. I had good feelings about them. (They were still made by IBM back then, I think.) A few months ago I had to buy a laptop so, based on no justifiable reasoning, turned to Lenovo and got a T590 Thinkpad. I'm pretty satisfied.

One (almost trivially) disappointing thing: it has no "disk activity" LED. When Windows Update (for example) is just sitting there I would like to know if there is at least some disk activity.

Also, it comes with a bunch of Lenovo software. I have no idea how much is bloatware and how much is needed. (A clean install would fix that ... assuming none of it is needed.)

My friend has a 5 years old HP probook and he asked me to install a SSD.
I was impressed with the quality details.

Thanks for your tips and ideas. Honestly, I won't be using it very much at all, and don't plan to take it anywhere out with me. I would just want to take it into the kitchen or living room at times and probably not use it for more than an hour or two.

I understand the idea of paying extra for a business computer, but it's only me and my husband and he rarely goes on the computer. I definitely wouldn't put an additional computer in the house. I have an old Lenovo in the basement with Windows 7 on a dial up connection, just in case my cable is out for a few hours and I have to go online for something.

I've learned a lot from your replies and appreciate your taking the time to give me so much detail. I thought $600 was a lot of money for my needs and gentle use, definitely wouldn't pay more.
The HP ProBook is a similar price to the Pavilion if you compare like for like features. I just bought a HP ProBook G6 450 for £650 (UK) which has the following spec:

    Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i5-8265U CPU & Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU
    15.6" FHD IPS display
    512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
    8 GB RAM
    TPM 2,0 security chip
    Fingerprint sensor
1 year HP HW Maintenance Offsite Support
3 months HP Support for Initial Setup

This was the best deal I could find for the specification

All the suggestions here are good. Even though this would not be a main system for you, the SSD and decent graphics are still a must. 8GB mem is fine, 16GB would be more ideal if you decide to make more daily use of it, to supplement the desktop. All in all, the HP models listed seem to fit the bill for want you want to do. I think you have a wealth of info here from some very knowledgeable members.

I assume these types of laptops can be used with a mouse
I use a Logitech M535, or the older M555, with my laptops. You may have a problem with the touch pads. While typing on laptops and not watching the screen while typing, you will frequently find that the newer text appears in the wrong place, when reviewing your text.

The cause is that modern touch pads are so sensitive that they cause random cursor movements. I go into mouse settings and disable the touch pad, when another mouse is connected. This stops the random cursor movements.

Also go for Windows 10 Pro and not Home.

I would agree with Josey, but a new one would be too expensive. I've bought seven of them, five being second hand. The only problems I've had have been exhausted batteries, due to old age. I still have six of them in use, although the first, a CF-71, has gone as it used Windows 98.

I don't want a computer with a touch screen at all, just a simple keyboard. I'll be going to a couple of stores this weekend and see if anything is on sale. Thanks again to everyone for your input.

Since I keep seeing the prompt to mark this thread solved, I will....but when I buy a computer I'll post and let you all know what I went with.

If you don't already know this you're within a stone's throw of BLACK FRIDAY. I can see prices rising right now so that they can come back down. I'd WAIT. Weird but true -- the best deals I see on Amazon are typically 2 weeks before Black Friday.

I absolutely agree with Pool Man! Wait until Black Friday for prices to drop at brick and mortar stores. Also, watch ads for stores near you; Staples, Best Buy, etc. BTW, Office Depot doesn't seem to carry 17+" laptops any more.

Maybe keep an eye on some of the laptops mentioned in this thread (for sale prices).

I have an HP Envy 15.6" 2 in 1 Convertible, I have no problem with the screen size and my old age eyes. It is usually set at 125%. Although you said you didn't want a touch screen, this laptop has that ability if you want to use it, you can stand it different ways and use it as a tablet.

It came with 2 drives, a 128GB SSD and a 1TB Hard Drive with 8GB of RAM, I use the SSD for the Operating System and main programs and the Hard Drive for all my other programs and my data.

I used to use a wired mouse, I'm not very good with the touchpad, but now use a wireless mouse which is great. I will say I'm very impressed with this HP and how cool it is, my old laptop is an Asus and that can get quite hot.

I have a desktop computer but that is down the hall at the other end of the bungalow and mainly used for banking and important stuff whereas this laptop lives in the living room and is used for visiting my forums and emails etc.

Of course as I'm on the other side of the pond I don't know how it would be cost wise, I paid just over £600, it came with Windows 10 Home but I've never had any problems keeping it up to date through Windows Update. I know when I was first looking for another laptop a few people told me not to go with HP but I've had no problems and I'm quite happy with my choice.

Good luck with whatever you decide to get.
