Help - Windows 10 latest update has totally messed up my system

I just rebooted my system and when I logged in I was greeted by a "Preparing WIndows" message. After that I was told that I was being logged in with a temporary profile and that I wouldn't be able to access my files, and my desktop is totally screwed up... Winver shows 1903 build 18362.388.

MS WTF have you done to me.

The latest version is 18362.418 after Tuesday's 'Patch Tuesday' cumulative update.

    As for:

"After that I was told that I was being logged in with a temporary profile and that I wouldn't be able to access my files"
I have no idea what that's about.

18362.418 should have been offered automatically, as it is the monthly security update.

A (nerve wracking) system restore has returned my system to how it was. I had installed an "optional" Windows update (I think yesterday) but don't remember the KB number.

I'm rather worried that installing the latest update (KB4517389) will put me back the same hole.

However I'll take a Restore Point and try it.

I use local logins not MS network logins onall my systems and have no doubt that this problem is related to that.

Do you use imaging software (such as Macrium Reflect) or do you rely on restore points only?

Yes I use imaging software, but no I don't run daily backups.

Last backup was about a week ago.

KB4517389 went in just fine and system came back as normal afterwards, so &deity knows what went pear shaped.

    I'm on 18362.388 also.
When you say "18362.418 should have been offered automatically, as it is the monthly security update" I don't see a recent one. What KB# is it? My last Security Update was KB4516115 I installed 9/10/2019.

I'm holding off on downloading KB4517389 based on posts like perdrix's.

Do you have any thoughts on me installing the 2 updates shown on the attached capture?
Or should I find a 'missing' (?) Security Update to move up to 18362.418.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

KB4517389 is the one that takes you to 18362.418. It is the monthly security update (released on the second Tuesday of every month), and it is recommended that you install it (along with the Malicious Software Removal Tool update).

"I'm holding off on downloading KB4517389 based on posts like perdrix's."

    Have a look at @perdrix 's post #5

    Cheers,

    Eddie.
