Something very odd happened today. A new desktop appeared on my screen which was about 1 year old. The desktop I was using yesterday is saved on OneDrive but how do I replace the old desktop with the one I was using yesterday? This is puzzling

Hi, you might have inadvertently created a virtual desktop. (Just a guess given your post). See:

No not the background picture - the complete desktop has changed to an earlier version with folders that had been deleted and the desktop I had yesterday isn't showing but if I click on Onedrive Desktop then I see all the folders that should be showing. I have checked but haven't created a virtual desktop - it's puzzling me
When I go to Explorer and click on This PC / Desktop - I see the contents of desktop that is showing on screen today. If I go to OneDrive and click on Desktop - I see the contents that were on the desktop yesterday. I want yesterdays back to show on screen
Right click on Desktop folder under Onedrive, click on Location tab, and click on Restore default. If it is already on your C: drive, you could restore your system to yesterday's state.
Copying files and folders from Onedrive folder should also work. But we still don't know how this happened
Hope you have backup or some restore points.
Tried a Restore earlier but it always fails. There were 3 updates yesterday from Microsoft and tried to restore to before that but it won't do it. Have right clicked on Desktop in OneDrive and no Location option. There is on the Desktop on This PC though
