What's the "date" timestamp in Windows 10 file explorer?

I'm trying to figure out timestamping in Windows. The only one I cannot figure out is "date", is this "date created", "date modified"? It's sometimes one or the other by what I can see.

    Thanks in advance

I'm on 1903 (OS build 18362.388) and it seems to default to date modified.

I think there is probably a host of variables!

For instance: the kind of item, how/when it was created or acquired, etc...

I have a weekly pdf download that lands on my Desktop, a few minutes later I move it to Documents; in Documents, the Date created is always a few minutes later than the Date.
