    Hi dalchina,

    Thanks for the reply.

    "Cortana is missing.
    - Should be shown under the Processes tab..."
    Seriously, it was not shown anywhere in Task Manager - I did a good search a couple of time.

    KB4524100 correct, "Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903"

    FYI KB890830 is Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 (6 digits is correct)

    Windows Search Troubleshooter didn't find any problems.

    SpyBot Anti-beacon is not an issue.

    The Solution (for me)
    -------------------------------

    As mentioned above Settings, Windows Update, View update history shows these:
    KB4524100 installed on 02/11/2019
    KB4517389 installed on 02/11/2019
    KB890830 installed on 02/11/2019
    Clicking on Uninstall Updates only shows one of these three (KB4517389 with a different install date), but shows two others not in the above list:
    KB4517389 installed on 03/11/2019
    KB4515871 installed on 03/11/2019
    KB4521863 installed on 02/11/2019
    WTF?
    (By the way, dates here are in UK format dd/mm/yyyy)

    So, a quick search revealed this
    <https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-1903-known-problems-in-the-kb4517389-update/>
    which mentions the issue.
    <quote>
    Other reported issues that people are seeing include:
    VMWare 14 no longer working.
    Users still unable to perform searches from the Start Menu search.
    </quote>
    This page also describes the uninstall process.

    It is also worth looking at the Related Article <https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-start-menu-search-issues-continue-after-kb4522355-update/>.

    So anyway, I uninstalled KB4517389 and everything is back to normal for me. There is no guarantee that it will work for everyone, but it's worth a try.

    BTW, a new update installed at the same time:
    KB4512508 installed on 04/11/2019
    This one also does not appear in Settings, Windows Update, View update history - only in the Uninstall Updates list.
    So far, all OK.

    Just waiting for the next M$ cock-up :)

    Best regards everyone.

    4517389 is .418 Oct 8th

    4512508 was released Aug 13th

    - suggesting your build is now 18362.295 - is that correct?

    Correct.
    I had previously set my update delay to the absolute maximum I could, precisely because of these problems. Right now, that setting has reverted to normal, so I might try delaying updates again. I long for the days of Windows 7 where I had control over what and when things were updated. Linux is so much more friendly, but that's another story.

    Cumulative Update KB4522355 Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.449 - Oct. 24

    is now the latest...

    You have Win 10 Pro, so as you know you can defer feature updates for up to 365 days.

    You can also set updates to Notify in group policy, so for each and every update you receive a notification, and can decide whether to act on it or not.

    You can use a 3rd party tool to disable WU and updating is then via the tool. Check boxes allow you to select updates to be applied, option to hide (block) an update etc.

    Thanks for that. I'll definitely look at the settings.
