Please feel free to use the Feedback Hub app to raise your concern with MS.
In 1903 there is a slightly improved tray icon; if you had Pro, you could set updates to notify you of any pending update. Clicking on that opens Settings, and lists the update(s). You can then choose whether to act on them.
If unhappy with Windows update, there are various 3rd party tools you can use. You can disable Windows Update (tutorial available) and manually check for updates and have them listed. Select those you wish to apply using checkboxes.
Just what Dalchina says...
Let's face it, they will never change the model they are imposing, and it's precisely Apple's fault, they gave MS the idea with their faulty forced models.
In any case, into the solutions. Personally, I use a tool that basically turns Windows Update manual, so you can just install updates whenever you want. In my case, I just come here, check cumulative updates, if they are safe, I install, if not, I skip.
Pretty happy with it since then, and I can even update my store apps whenever I want.
Hi Bob, you may be able to prevent feature updates from surprising you with a few easy tweaks. I'm not certain what version of Windows 10 you have, however; this adjustment works on 1709 through 1809, as far as I know.
If you use wifi, left-click on the wifi icon on the right side of the task bar. This action will pop-up a window showing available network connections with the top network showing connected.
Click on the Properties link. This will display the Network Properties for that connection.
Scroll down a bit and click the button called 'Set as metered connection'.
By setting this to a metered connection you will possibly avoid Feature Updates without warning, the caveat being that this works for many versions of windows but could change without notice. This should allow only required security updates to download automatically.
When you check for updates, Windows will list the updates by KB# followed by a short description and the download size. You will then be advised to switch to a non-metered connection or accept to proceed on your metered connection. Or if you're up to date other than a Feature Update, you may see this;
As far as I know, the last several updates of windows has allowed you to set a metered connection while using an Ethernet connection as well. Setup should be possible using the same process as above or Start/settings/Network & Internet/Ethernet/ click on Ethernet connection icon and then set as metered connection.
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10
- 1 of the options is using a metered connection- which MS states it will override in certain circumstances.
Tools like WUMT, WUMgr allow manual scanning and choice of updates.
