Any Windows initiated shutdown/restart results in failure to POST

I'm don't organize my thoughts well, so please bear with me.

Issue began, I THINK, with a Windows update a few months ago.

Any Windows initiated shutdown/restart results in failure to post with the exception of the shutdown option in the start menu. Restart results in failure to post. Shutdown from CMD prompt results in failure to post. Fast startup is deselected in power options. Keyboard backlight, fans, and other laptop LEDs turn on, but I get no display, no splash screen. If I hold the power button to shut off at that point, it will boot normally. If I hold the power button to shut down from within Windows, it'll boot normally. As said, if I select shutdown in the start menu, it'll shut down and boot normally (I'm wondering if fast startup is truly turned off for this reason, even though the option is off - maybe the shutdown isn't giving me a true shutdown).

I ignored the problem for a couple months, but did a fresh Windows install last night and the issue persists. I don't know for sure that it's not a hardware problem, but it only has a problem on a windows initiated shutdown, so I'm not convinced its not Windows. Laptop is still under warranty so it won't be a problem to send it in other than losing my machine for 6-8 weeks for repair. I'd like to rule out software before I go that route.

Have you checked drivers. I would be inclined to use Asus drivers right from their site. For sure Chipset, Management Engine. Additionally you can check their page you can see what is available (say Sound driver) and you can then see in Device Manager if Windows is using a generic driver.

Not saying to update BIOS but are you current?


If you really want to kill Windows Fast Startup I would disable hibernation

powercfg - h off

to reverse change the word off to on.

Ran the command to turn off hibernation. I didnt receive any feedback from command prompt but fast startup and hibernation disappeared from the power options altogether so I'm assuming I did it correctly?

Still wont restart.

I installed all drivers from Asus with the exception of the video driver which I got directly from Nvidia. I did update BIOS firmware to the latest available as well. Still no dice.

My experience comes from the days of building 80486 machines when processors were getting faster but the HDD/Hard Disk Drives of the day weren't spinning up fast enough, hitting the Reset button restarted the P.O.S.T. and Windows would load as designed since the HDD was still spinning. The 'cure' was to set the BIOS to show the complete P.O.S.T. as it loaded which gave more time for the HDD to get up to operating speed.

Could it be related to the secondary HDD I installed despite it not being the boot drive? All other components are OEM, and until the OS install I referenced in my first post, I was still on the OEM Windows install.

I've update bios firmware to the latest available and I've reset default settings to no avail.
