My computer froze

My computer froze. I could not bring up the task manager either with CTRL +shift + Esc or with CTRL +Alt +delete. I could not turn the computer off. Finally, I noticed the clock was an hour behind. I unplugged the power cord. I still could not turn off the computer. After another 2 hours I reconnected the power cord and was able the turn the computer off and then on again. I think everything is normal. This is a fairly new computer about 1 year old. What could be causing this? Is there a better way to turn the machine off and on?

Do you know how to run an SFC scan?

Use SFC Scannow to Repair Windows System Files

Don't sweat the log files and such. Just tell us if it came back clean or came back with discussion of corrupted files and CBS.logs.

Is there a better way to turn the machine off and on?

Press and hold the power button until the computer turns off.

I should add that it's kinda normal for a PC to sometimes lock up. Mine do it when it didn't quite awake from sleep right. Not every time but now and again.

If this is the laptop you put in your profile, when it locks up, Feel the bottom of the laptop, is it Hot? If so, give it some air. Blow compressed air into the fans to blow out any dust. Consider investing in a Laptop Cooing Pad.
If it continues to happen, try a Clean Boot. If that works, then you can leave it that way or add one Startup or Service at a time til the computer freezes, then you will know what the problematic program is.

With regard to SFC scan, I ran the scan and I assume nothing was found because after the scanthe window simply closed.
I thought that I am another more able-bodied person who had held the on-off switch for an adequate time. I will be more meticulous the next time. Hopefully, that will be a long time in coming.
