    Goldengirl:

    Look here:

PassMark Software - CPU Benchmark Charts

You can look up any CPU you are considering to get a general idea of relative horsepower.

You will see a general score like 5455, which would be for all cores in the CPU.

But be sure to check the "single thread rating" as well--it will be considerably lower.

If you are not particularly impatient (Damn, this thing is slow!!!!!!!!!), you may want to give more weight to things other than the CPU---weight, battery life, screen size, warranty, etc.

Of course, all contingent on your budget.

TigerDirectB2B usually has great buys on Refurbished machines that come with a 1-year warranty for $199 to $549. What I look for is an SSD drive of at least 120GB, 8GB RAM but no less than 4GB and Wi-Fi 802.11n or 802.11AC but the AC version is newer and may not be as available as the n. For portability when I do my chemo treatment every 2 weeks I got a Dell 12.5" with 8GB and 256GB plus Bluetooth [part of the Wi-Fi adapter and saves having a mouse dongle sticking out], works great and cost $249 plus shipping and sales tax [thanks to Net Neutrality being disabled]. It does not have an Optical Disc Drive but I have a USB type that works fine. USB 3 ports would be good.

What most of the Notebooks are seem to be off-lease from companies and have been treated fairly well, are Class A or Class B and sizes up to 17" and come with Windows 10 Pro, generally 64-bit.

The main problem on laptops is the heat exchange and battery consumption. They aren't build for performance but for portability and long battery duration.
That's why laptops normally has 2 cores and run on a lower frequency.

So the main question is: What is the main purpose and what software you're going to run on it?

If you will use it for browse the internet and / or office (Word Excel etc) a i5 and 4 G of memory is all you need.

But the most important is that it must have a SSD, not HDD.
I have a Desktop for all most everything, but I like to kick back in my recliner with a lightweight laptop. I used it for a few things, almost everything I do except for games/gaming.

Surf the web for information, forums, email, photo editing from my journey's outdoors. I like to set it up in my kitchen and watch videos while cooking. My laptops usually don't leave the house so they don't get very josseled (I don't think that's a word, lol) about. I had my Toshiba since 2012 and never had to do anything really major, I guess a new hard-drive is kind of major but it was pretty uncomplicated.

As for the CPU speed, I'm using an 'old?' HP 15-g029 on my lap in front of the TV, has a 1.50GHz CPU, 4GB RAM with an 8GB SDHC card set for the ReadyBoost, speedy enough. I have several Notebooks I have rehabbed rather than let a client simply throw away, an advantage for me since the local recycle is no longer doing e-Recycle.

I am liking this one more, since I went to Walmart and they had one. They seem pretty well made, but not too heavy. What do you all think?

Can't get the link in right, oh well, I think this will get you there:

    PassMark - Intel Celeron N4000 @ 1.10GHz - Price performance comparison

    That's a Celeron N4000 dual core.

    Quite puny, I'd think.

But maybe adequate depending on your expectations.

Look up your old Toshiba at Passmark to give you a comparison

The Lenovo you posted the link has a Celeron processor N4000. Celeron are the bottom line of intel processors. And it has 64GB eMMC (storage capacity) that can't be upgraded (soldered to the MB).
    Newegg Laptops
If the laptop comes with a HDD you can install a SSD later (120G ~US$25 or 250G ~US$45)

that's also a small "laptop" which I basically want something a bit better than the Chrome OS, so even adding Win 10 should be ok for a "second" computer. My Toshiba was 17 inch too, and when I sent it up for my brother-in-law, I sent all the paperwork/manuals along with it so I can't find the model number now etc.

I'll be back later, having a hard time feeling good today, apologies, but I will come back:)

I have a similar 11" that Wal*Mart put on an unadvertised special the day I happened to be there for $139 but after a couple of years the Win10 updates couldn't be done, not enough room on the 32GB drive and wouldn't allow an additional USB drive, so it is now happily living with Linux Mint 19.1.
