I appreciate the advice. I'll have to decide whether to continue that never ending battle.

What are the status of the important files?
    a) backed up to another drive or cloud?
    b) not yet backed up?

Another possible fix may be a reset save files equivalent (reinstall drivers and applications).

B; I'll just copy them over to my APFS partition when I feel like reinstalling.

I can't say I've heard of that before. Can you elaborate?

Ah, right. Yes, it doesn't hurt to try that initially.

It wasn't super clear on what happens with directories outside the Windows directory, like Program Files, Users, etc. Do they get moved into Windows.old as well?

I'll back everything up, but if it works I guess it'll at least save me from copying everything back to the partition again.

This is a known issue with all Windows editions after 7 and Bootcamp on older devices. This is a known issue with the NVIDIA driver and Windows in Bootcamp. Can you still get into MacOS and what version of MacOS are you running on your Macbook? The Bootcamp support forums at support.apple.com have more info on dealing with this vs. the other way around.

Thanks. I don't think it's the issue here since the Macbook Air 2012 doesn't have any secondary GPU apart from Intel's. Unless the Bootcamp driver installer installed unnecessary nvidia drivers there are no such drivers on the system. The Windows installation has worked well up until now, but it probably got corrupted or something when an update was interrupted.

I can boot macOS 10.14 just fine.

Go back into MacOS and have Bootcamp Assistant download the drivers for Windows again. There is really no one easy solution when running Windows in Boot Camp and Parallels. The Black Screen has been an issue with Windows forever.

How would I install them onto my non booting Windows installation once I have them?

From MacOs in BCA. Everything is in the Apple Support forums. Most just resort to reinstalling Windows instted of messing around with trying to fix a install on a Mac. It is one reason why I do not mix hardware platforms with OSís. I still have a Windows Desktop for doing those things that I am limited to doing in Mac OS. The MacOS platform outperforms Windows in a lot of ways. It like Windows has had its growing pains. Windows 10 is going through huge growth spurts and will break on the Mac platform.
