What has happened to the icons on my start menu

I opened my start menu yesterday and this is what I found. Why are "some" of the icons showing with that black background?

Hi, from the tutorial section- free to search- you might try

Restart Start Menu in Windows 10
    - if applicable to your unstated Windows build
Start Menu Troubleshooter in Windows 10

Clear Live Tile Cache on Start in Windows 10

Re-register Start Menu in Windows 10
    If no other option
Reset Start Layout in Windows 10

Note that the Start Menu is vulnerable, else there wouldn't be threads reporting problems with it.

There is a tutorial about backing up and restoring its layout, which you might consider.

Personally, I use Open Shell (free) - and fortunately when I do look at Win 10's it's always been ok.

Looks as though the dark ones are the ones installing or updating.

I didn't get any notifications that I had answers so I want to thank you and the other person who answered. Start Menu came out of it ok, but I have emailed myself this page so that if it happens again I can check out the things you have indicated.
