can't identify or open unknown file type

I have run across some video files that, although tagged as MP4, cannot be played on my VLC player, KM player, or Windows Media Player. File Identifier (File Identifier - Identify unknown files instantly) shows info as attached. Please tell me how to deal with these files so they are usable on my PC.

Thanks for your reply, sbh7600...No, I'm not sure of anything about this file other than it was in a series with a lot of other mp4 video files that all opened and played without a problem.

I’d check the file out with virustotal: https://www.virustotal.com

#4 sbh7600...Yea, that's probably the smart thing to do. I did scan the file and it was "clean," but...

#5 Thanks for the suggestion, Bastet. VirusTotal did it's thing and nothing came up, but when I tried to upload the file, it got hung up at 30%.

Try examining them to see if the codecs needed to play them can be identified. No codecs- probably not valid.

But if you're unsure of the source- it can only be a matter of curiosity, so safest to dispose of them.

    Another approach:

And you could try e.g. Avidemux (free) and see if it can read them.

It installs on my 2 PCs- 1903...
    Download Avidemux latest release

When did the error occur? - when you tried to open your file?

If it's not a video file (try a valid one..) I suppose anything might happen depending on how well it's written.
