    Explorer.exe crashing and restarting loop.

About a minute after starting up, my desktop begins to start flashing to black and coming back in a continuous loop. The file explorer, however is completely unaffected. Is there any fix for this? Using Google I have found that this occurred back in the technical previews of Windows 10 as well, but a new update from Windows fixed the issue. I can not get the explorer stable long enough to even check Windows Update. I have also run sfc /scannow and it said the integrity of my system is fine. Please help. Thanks in advance.

I had this problem too, it appears to have been due to a startup program that was crashing Explorer, which would then of course restart and on and one. In my case I suspect it was either iCloud permission issues (I have had several bits of permission strangeness, but none with this major of an issue) or a program called Reimage Repair I had tried to use to fix some of those permission errors, but made the mistake of not immediately uninstalling when it asked for money to actually perform fixes.

I would suggest going into the key Administrator account or another user account besides the one having the issues and see if there is anything recently installed that you should probably uninstall.

Thank you, this seemed to fix it. I enabled the Administrator using command prompt and uninstalled my malfunctioning IDT Audio Codec as well as attempting to uninstall Onedrive and some other programs. After a restart this seems to have fixed my problems so thank you!

happening to me in 1511; explorer.exe crashes and restarts at high speeds making system unusable after I did the 1511 update. Resetting Windows did not help. Finally tracked problem to explorer but have no idea how to fix it without nuking my hard drive. Tried even doing image restore but windows wanted drivers for the hard drive; that doesn't make sense to me either.

I have had this problem on two computers now: The first one, an Asus laptop, I fixed it by nuking the harddrive and reinstalling Windows. I didn't care about anything on the harddrive because it was backed up.

The second machine, a Dell Inspiron laptop, was fixed by uninstalling IDT Sound drivers and running some registry fixes.

Could you please be more specific in how you fixed the issue. I can't restart my computer now because of a Explorer.exe error. I can shut down, but now restart. Thanks.

Along the way I got all data off the system drive and reinstalled Windows, then did the update to 1511. After cleaning up the mess I found that things that didn't work from the original Win 7 install, like any of the mobo's bluetooth capability, now worked perfectly. But I'll never stop being frustrated by MS's inability to do clean upgrades even after one jumps through all sorts of hoops to carefully prepare. It all seems terribly random. And that comes from someone who first started programming computers more then 40 years ago.

I never found a cause, only a way to get around the problem

I tried for a few days to diagnose the problem; in the end I had to reinstall Windows, though I first got my data off what is now the system drive.
