How to get Insert Key to work

This has been a constant source of frustration with Microsoft in General and Windows 10 in particular. The insert key no longer toggles between insert and overwrite. Is there a way to get this to work? I have version 1903.

    Welcome to TenForums @uwphotonut

In what situation? Which app are you using it in?

I've had a look in 1903. The Ins key toggles between insert and overwrite in Wordpad, but has no effect in Notepad. It toggles insert mode in a Command Prompt, but does nothing in Powershell.

Where do you want to use it?

It's nothing to do with Windows as such. An editor has to be written to include code to handle insert mode. All the major Office suites do.

Seems that insert mode has never been a feature supported by Notepad. This is talking about Notepad in Win7 from nearly 7 years ago...

Apparently notepad.exe is too basic an editor and does not support the overtype mode.
    Wordpad has this feature though.
Overwrite text in Windows Notepad - Super User

Notepad will become a Store App in the Win10 to be released April 2020, so maybe it will support insert mode then.

Microsoft will now update Notepad via Microsoft Store in Windows 10

In the mean time, Notepad++ does support insert mode.

It doesn't work in MS office 2016, either--that's especially a problem for me in Word.

    It should:

    Type-over text (Overtype mode)

But it's controlled by an option:

Type over text in Word for Windows

    And it's disabled by default:

Overtype mode is disabled in Word
