Failed Seagate Expansion Drive -Any Chance of Data Recovery

The portable USB Seagate Expansion drive I use to backup my laptop appears to have expired after 5 years. This is annoying since it contains the Reflect backup of the initial state of my new laptop. The blue LED on the drive lights, there is an ominous whining on connection then silence. The drive does not appear under My PC on any PC nor when running the Seatools diagnostics. I put the drive in another caddy with the same result.

I assume the drive has expired. Is there any data recovery software which could extract data from the drive?

When buying a new portable backup drive, does any drive stand out as being more reliable / robust? I want a large 2T drive and it will need to be another hard drive since a SSD will be too expensive.

I'd guess your only hope of data recovery would be expensive/specialist.

I personally prefer Hitachi/Toshiba.. and BackBlaze's stats tend to support that from my odd quick skim.

They do tend to show stats for industrial scale drives- maybe older figures show smaller drives.
