How to get rid of 'Top apps' display, Win10 Ver 1903

When Cortana is dismissed, she's replaced with a useful Search function that heretofore was simple and unobtrusive. With the upgrade(?) to Version 1903, the Search box is now much wider and has a lineup of 'Top apps' icons across the top. I assume the system keeps track of app usage and displays the ones used most in that lineup, although some of those shown on my machine haven't been used in months. Is there a way to get rid of that icon display and, hopefully, reduce the size of the Search box back to something less in-your-face'?

Ah, that answer inspires great hope. I will "stay tuned," as the radio announcers used to say. Godspeed and thanks!

Thanks.. certainly gets rid of 'top apps', although it's a bit of a transformation, yet that may suit some people...

Using the floating toolbar, I find clicking X in the search box a couple of times brings back the top apps format.
When that happens, relaunching it (Win key + s) shows that form again. Takes a couple of times to return to the small format floating toolbar.

So top apps can be made to reappear:

    I started from this:
    Enable_floating_immersive_Search_bar_with_round_corners.reg

Clicking All or More in the floating toolbar can cause such a display to appear too.

Brilliant! Thanks, all... Brink to the rescue once again. Like ThrashZone, I went with the bar with rounded corners. Now, how does one enable the little magnifying glass icon in the tray? So far I can bring up Search only by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Search.

Right click taskbar, and select search-show search icon

Hide or Show Search Box or Search Icon on Taskbar in Windows 10
