    Downloads folder after latest cumulative update

    Hi, my PC just installed the cumulative update that stated I needed to update the April 2018 update or something. Anyway, my downloads folder now has these horizontal organizers that read, "A long time ago", "Earlier this year", "Last month", etc. How do I remove or turn these off, please?

    Unfortunately for me when I do that sometimes it takes a while for it to open the folder. I get the scanning effect on the location bar and yes I've gone into properties of Downloads and set it to General Items and all folders in it.

    If you have a lot of large pic or video files in that folder, it could cause it to take a while to load for their thumbnail previews.

    If you don't care about seeing thumbnails, you can turn them off to stop this if this is the cause.

    Enable or Disable Thumbnail Previews in File Explorer in Windows 10

    In addition, if you have any network locations in the folder, it may sometimes take a bit to load while waiting to connect to a network location.

    After setting the view in Downloads to your liking, you should select Folder Options from the View ribbon and use the Apply to Folders option to set a custom template for the Downloads FolderType

    .This ensures that your settings are applied to Downloads reagrless of how you access it (each unique Namespace path saves its own view):
    • This PC\Downloads
    • <UserDisplayName>\Downloads
    • This PC\C:\Users\<UserName>\Downloads

    as well as any common dialogs (Open/Save/Save As) that have not aleady been opened and closed with a grouped view. To wipe out any erroneously saved grouped views in common dialogs, copy & paste the following code into a PowerShell window:

    Code:
    $Bags = 'HKCU:\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags'
    $DLID = '{885A186E-A440-4ADA-812B-DB871B942259}'
    gci $bags -recurse |
       ?{$_.GetSubkeyNames() -contains $DLID} |
       remove-item -Path { join-path $_.PSPath $DLID }
    Run this after you have used Apply to Folders to ensure your preferences are appled to dialogs.

    Thanks, KeithM. I was noticing y'day that the undesired view from my OP was appearing in certain dialogs; just hadn't gotten around to asking about it. And that's probably the first time I've used PowerShell (PC user/abuser since 1991) (Yes, really).
