Desktop shortcut icons showing up as blank document icons?

Hi! I just got a new laptop the other day, and for some reason all of my app shortcut icons have changed to a plain white document icon.

    See below:

Why did this happen and more importantly, how do I fix it? For convenience and aesthetic purposes.

iTunes is the only shortcut icon that stayed normal.

Also, even the iTunes has a white border around it, as did the other icons before they changed to the blank document icon. Is there any way I can fix this, as well?

For example: I've seen other laptops with iTunes installed that have just a round iTunes logo with a transparent background, and no white border. And I hate how the white borders look!

You can right-click an icon [just a shortcut to a program] and see if Change icon will work. Most times when a generic icon is seen it means the 'path' to the program's .exe/executable file has been lost or corrupted. Right-click that icon and check the file location, sometimes programs have to be reinstalled to get things right. Sometimes one can locate the executable for that program and right-click, choose Send to and Desktop as a shortcut.

Repair Blank Shourtcut Icons by executing following commands:

    Code:
    Reg Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\User Choice" /f

    Del /F /Q /A %LOCALAPPDATA%\IconCache.db

    Del /F /Q /A %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\*.db

    Del /F /Q /A "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db"
    Reboot your computer.

Nice. Would DISM do the same?

Use DISM to fix Windows component store corruption when a sfc /scannow command is unable to repair component store corruption. OP problem nothing to do with component store corruption as the shortcut is not a system file.

That's what I was thinking until you came along with that idea. Couldn't hurt, anyway. Thanks.

Very easy to fix. Follow option number 1:

Hi catikitty. I started a thread today about the same kind of issue. Only apps placed on the desktop as shortcuts have the icons goes blank issue. Not a problem if they are pinned to taskbar. Wasn't related to the icon cache as I tried to rebuild it and still same issue on both a desktop and laptop. Unfortunately I don't know the reason for this issue. Good luck.
